HEAVY AMERICANA

notes

On Revelation Sunday, The Steepwater Band takes full advantage of their musical depth and diversity, combining their influences, distinctive songwriting, and a rootsy intensity to create their own brand of classic sounding edgy rock or what some have called “Heavy Americana.”

The Chicago-bred trio’s organic, hard-driving synthesis of gutsy hard rock, gritty Delta blues, soulful backwoods boogie and down-home psychedelia has taken its hometown by storm. The frenzied power of the band's live shows has won them a fiercely loyal fan base, and their last CD Dharmakaya (produced by Sean Slade & Paul Kolderie – Radiohead, Hole, Warren Zevon) received substantial airplay across the Midwest, including Chicago's influential WXRT.

The Steepwater Band (guitarist / vocalist Jeff Massey, bassist Tod Bowers and drummer Joseph Winters) have played together since their teens in various rock and blues combos. The three musicians united to form The Steepwater Band in 1998, taking the name from a barge Massey spotted in Lake Michigan.

The young trio quickly found their own voice, progressing from covering Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson, and John Lee Hooker songs to writing and performing their own compelling originals. From the beginning, The Steepwater Band has been a relentless performing unit, playing an average of 125 shows per year -- headlining such prestigious Chicago venues as the Metro and the Double Door -- while expanding their touring base throughout the Midwest and beyond.

The Steepwater Band has shared the stage with acts as diverse as Buddy Guy, Wilco, Gov't Mule, Cheap Trick, Umphreys McGee, Bad Company, Drive-By Truckers, and Deep Purple. In 2005 the band made its European debut, performing at the Azkena Rock Festival in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain and has returned the following two years for club/festival tours.

Revelation Sunday clearly draws the roadmap of The Steepwater Band’s musical drive and direction. The songs on the record range from straight-ahead roots-rockers like “Collision” and “Steel Sky,” to a composition of Indian flavor called “Dance Me A Number.” They even dabble in pop-sensibility on the infectiously catchy “Halo,” along with the beautifully melodic “A Lot Of Love Around.” Brand new and collectively written as a band, the song sequence on Revelation Sunday takes the listener on an aural trip through the band’s present, while offering a glimpse of what might be in store for their future.

The creative electricity and contagious energy of the band is equally evident in their live performances, as their shows have been well-received by critics and fans alike. It’s the unpretentious devotion to their music, and their commitment to achieving their musical goals without compromising the integrity of their musical vision, that makes The Steepwater Band such a refreshing discovery.

I saw Steepwater at the new years Eve Bash at the Hyatt Regency. I loved it . My wife and I were right in front of the Bass player,Todd. Had to buy Revolution Sunday. I have it in my car now and listen to it when we drive around. I'll put it this way... They've got a couple of new fans! See you at the next show we can make it to...

    author: Josh Morton

This is the kind of music I've been waiting for. This album has taken blues and rock to a whole new level. I can't stop listening to this CD, it gets better every time. This is just an incredible CD that everyone should listen to. If the Steepwater Band keeps doing what they did on this album they should be set for life.

  • Great Stuff

This is the first CD I have heard from Steepwater, although I have been loosely following the band thru their mailings. The music is rich and unique, to say the least! I think it mixes some great rock and blues. Looking forward to hearing ALOT more form The Steepwater Band.

I first heard this band on a cruise in early January and they rocked the ship. The music on this CD is awesome! I listen to it quite a bit and enjoy it more with each listening. I hope to hear the music on the radio in PA.

  • Really great great music!!!
    author: Karen

This CD has all great tracks, the music is wonderful, but the lyrics were way better than I expected!!!!

  • Another outstanding release!
    author: David J Brown

This release proves once again that Steepwater is a truly great band. REVELATION SUNDAY is not only great rock, it's also a very smart album that keeps the best of the band's qualities up front while branching-out into new areas. Songs like MERCY, COLLISION, and INDIANA LINE are true form Steepwater: gritty, soulful, bluesy rock with a punch. HALO, and especially DANCE ME A NUMBER, show Steepwater breaking into new territory in a way that works (as opposed to some bands who do this and come across as desperate). The result is a an effort that shows Steepwater at the top of their game: doing what they do best and branching out with confidence, intelligence and just great go##amn music.

  • Get this record now!
    author: Angela Prazza

This is serious, heart-felt rock and roll with a blues edge. When listening to this record, I keep thinking each tune gets better and better. Opening with the rollicking "Mercy," it draws you in and never lets you go...to the infectious "Baby, You're On Your Own. The unique track on the record, "Dance Me a Number" is at once flamenco and eastern, makes you want to dance for certain. Through and through these musicians deliver solid performances and wonderful songwriting. This is one of those records that keeps you going back to start it over again. These guys are huge talents, each a master of his own craft and expertly interweaved to create a sound that defines rock and roll. It is refreshing and reassuring that we have rock and roll of this caliber being created today. If these boys would have come out in the early 70's they would have been opening for the likes of Faces or the Cream. Rock on boys, you will be gathering many more fans with this classic record!

  • !!!!One of the best albums of the year!!!!
    author: Axel

Folks, this album kills... just fantastic, don't miss it!!!

  • sounds great, live feel. baby your on your own and A lot to love are great songs
    author: John Lavarda

The cd had a real live feel to it. All the songs are excellent but some stand out. The lead guitar on Baby your on your own is amazing. Slow train drag had a southern feel to it.I love Revelation Sunday. I just wish it was a little bit longer. All in all it's a great cd that should get them the attention and recognition that they deserve.

  • The Steepwater Band screams and pulls out all the stops
    author: Susan "Stoney"

From the grind and stomps of Mercy to the soulful shine of A lot of love around, to the jamming Slow Train Drag, Indiana Line, and powerful Baby you're on your own, this album has a sweat drenched moan. This band is at the top of their game and should be blowing mainstream. Guess you can say I love it.

    BLUES % NICE MELODY

  • BEST ALBUM YET !!!!!
    author: Roger

THIS ALBUM SMOKES! The Steepwater Band in my opinion is so much better as a three piece. This album smokes Dharmakaya-no disrespect to that album either. When is the music industry going to get their head out of their ass!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Diamond In The Rough
    author: allan burt

The Steepwater Band revert back to their original lineup as a trio and produce a very fine CD in Revelation Sunday but for me the ghost of former member Michael Connolly still lingers and the CD lacks a little of the width and depth that he provided. Several stand out tracks here but Slow Train Drag is worth $11.99 on its own.

  • author: Chief

I believe this to be their best cd yet, and it has a real nice variety of songs unlike some of their previous efforts. Songs like Dance me a Number and Slow Train Drag really show what a versatile band this can be and the overall sound & production on this album is excellent. All fans of blues rock n' roll should check this album out, you won't be disappointed!

  • INCREDIBLE ALBUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AWESOME MUSICIANSHIP!!!!!!!!!!!!
    author: Keith

This album is amazing! All Killer no filler. The Steepwater Band have layed down a musical masterpiece. This band needs to be recognized! I am blown away by the musicanship on this album. It has restored my faith in new music! I look forward to seeing this band evolve and catching them tearing it up live!

  • Best indie album of the year
    author: Chicky

The best REAL rock out there! Every song is perfect. Great musicians, great song writing, great vibe. Buy the cd, take it home and listen to it just once. You'll be floored. I'm confident there is nothing out there right now this original and spectacular.

  • A decade of understatements = music industry loss.
    author: Jones

Since mic night at Leroy's this band has kept me in pure delight. Years of sitting at hole in the wall bars I wondered how is it possible this talent only charged $2 cover. The trio is back and still no recognition.

  • An awesome display of raw talent.
    author: Ramsay

I challenge anyone that can find a body of music that can capture soul, skill, and grit the way this cd will. This is an essential addition to any music collection. I am proud to have it in mine.

  • author: bill

this cd is fantastic! got it at their cd release show in chicago at the metro. the music industry needs wake up and listen.

  • Never ceasing to amaze

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better than Dharmakaya, Revelation Sunday packs the biggest punch to date! Is there anything this band can't do??

  • this album is another step forward for a great band
    author: craigy

This band has always been the top shelf of indie bands and just proves again that the mainstream music companies have no idea what the public wants to hear. this is their sixth indie release and it is excellent. Better than anything else out their right now. Good luck to this band.
