Vacation Location (2008) - The last workday before Christmas, I asked John at Pier 54 in Tempe if he was done for the year. His reply "Yep, too much vacation, no motivation." I tied that with a tag line, "Vacation Location" from a campfire chat with San Carlos Realtors Pam and Karen during Mark Mulligan's music event in Yecora in the Sierra Madres – Voila!
Tiki Bar in My Backyard (2005) - I wondered how is was ever going to write a beach song from the middle of the Desert!! But I do have a Tiki Bar!!
Sailine Solution (2007) – In sixth grade Chemistry we were learning about household chemicals. The teacher said Visine was basically salt and water – a “saline solution.” I said, "So is the Ocean but it's a “Sailing Solution”. LOL! Anyway not too many quadruple entendre’s around. Here ya go!
It’s OK to Have a Trailer in Mexico (2007) – At breakfast in San Carlos during Mark Mulligan’s Aqua Fest, I overheard his brother John state, “I have a trailer, but it’s in Mexico, so that’s OK.” Having had one myself and considering the great times we've had at Bruce & Giggles', Charlie and Claudia's and many other friends' trailers in Mexico – this one popped right out!
Bourbon Street South (2006) - During Meeting of the Minds and while walking down Duval, Hurricane in hand, and listening to Trop Rock wafting from the Conchy Tonks, I said to Elizabeth, "This is just like Bourbon Street –just warmer! – It’s Bourbon Street South!!"
Sonora (2006) - I got a Martin D-35 from Mark and the melody just came out as soon as I started playing. Thanks Mark!
Relative Emotion (Rocket Science Love Song) (2008) – The title came from something altogether different, but as I started writing the poem, it turned into a rocket science love song! Being able to check off having a train song while at the same time including audio and visible Doppler, Quantum Mechanics and Newton’s First Law of Motion. I guess this shows just how twisted my mind can get! Thanks to Bobby Sahlen from San Carlos who found a melody that fit the poem!
Irie Sponsible (2008) – I love playing with words – the first time I was in Jamaica (a long time ago) I thought of the title. After writing this, I wasn't sure how it would be received by the Rastafarian community, being a “white man's” interpretation of an Island lifestyle. My fears were put to rest in 2009 while on the west coast of Union Island in the Grenadines when the locals starting tapping along with spoons on Coke bottles to the song.
Add Money Repeat (2009) – Sailing in the Grenadines with captain Tony & Neil – every sailing mistake was met by Neil saying this line. Extrapolating it to other life situations was obvious to me.
Daylight Dolphin Time (2009) – Sitting on San Francisco Beach in front of Bahia Delfin, San Carlos, Sonora, someone asked, “When do the Dolphins come by?” I replied, “About 15 minutes after sunrise and 15 minutes before sunset. Its sorta ‘Daylight Dolphin Time’”.
$80 Taxi Ride (2005) – My first song, thanks to Mark Mulligan's suggestion that I just had to write a song inspired by experiences during our Belize vacation during October, 2001. Along with friends Jack, Paula, Bob, Tami, Paul & Tanna we got caught in Hurricane Iris. After being evacuated from Ambergris Caye to Belize City, we had to bribe a taxi driver $80 to take us to liquor store before Marshal Law was declared. We had a great hurricane party that night and the hurricane eye missed us by 60 miles. Tragically 60 miles south nineteen divers from the Richmond Virginia Dive Club died when a hole was torn in the bow of their boat because the bow line was tied up shorter then the swell. Whew!!
401 Keg (2005) - My goal when starting to play music again was to not have to pay for beer during retirement. Inspired by VFW Post 401 in Albuquerque New Mexico. Dedicated to all musicians who may have not financially prepared for the future.
Lost in The Desert (2005) – I heard the line coming out of Sky Harbor Airport Phoenix. An 8 year old girl and her dad were standing at the security exit, arms folded impatiently tapping their toes. Mom came trudging along 100 feet behind them with three bags on her arms. The little girl asked, ”What's the matter, Mom? Did you get lost in the Desert?” The same month, Elizabeth was in England and I was missing her terribly. Dedicated to everyone with loved ones off serving our country.
Sea Weed (2006) - Written after MOTM ‘06, finishing “Si Oui, Yea Mon”, reading Hiaasen’s Book “Skinny Dip”, listening to Hugo Duarte at a Canyon House Concert and casual conversation with the Wood Eye - it all came together! I have met more boomers who have found Sea Weed than went to Woodstock!
Quarter Past Heartache (2009) – I’m not sure where I heard this line but I liked it and wrote it down. Any resemblance to any person past or present is purely coincidental.
Too Much Blues (2008) – I guess it’s time for me to downsize. Here’s a blues song for you guys with all the toys.
It’s Not Cool To Be A Pirate Anymore (2009) – We were worried about pirates while sailing in the Grenadines. We got home and watched the “made for TV” drama about the Somalian pirates taking the U.S. ship and subsequent standoff ending with the SEAL snipers doing their job. The PHINS to the West’s theme was going to be “Dress as a Pirate”??? OK, so being a FAUX pirate is OK.
