notes
On June 1st 1998 the seven musicians who comprise the band "The Swing of Things" took to the stage of the Sky Room and before an enthusiastic audience, recorded the eleven selections on this CD. Ever since then, "The Swing of Things" has been performing at the Sky Room in Long Beach, California, an elegant restaurant decorated in art deco splender located on the fourteenth floor of the Breaker's Hotel, which overlooks the harbor and the entire LA basin. Each evening, diners and dancers have been listening to a music that, until recently, has been almost totally absent from the live stage; swing music.
The music that in the 1930's, 40's and 50's captivated millions of hearts is making a comeback, and everybody is once again, getting into the swing of things. But for some, the swingin' jazz and the romantic melodies have never left. Vocalist Sylvia Rodriguez and trumpeter Barry Anthony, although both were born well past the swing era, grew up with a deep appreciation and love for this music and a high regard for the great musicians who, once upon a time, created and ruled the world of Jazz and Swing.
The choice selections on this CD reflects not only the most popular songs of the Sky Room patrons, but is also a timely tribute by two artists to their mentors, the great musical spirits that have always inspired them and ultimately inspired this recording.
