notes
Terry Disley was born in London where he studied piano and theory of music from age 8. He spent the next 12 years studying classical repertoire, jazz, composition, piano accordion, saxophone, harmony and arranging at the Salterton School of Music. He began composing at age 11 and by 13 was writing for his own electric/acoustic chamber group. Since then he has gone on to write for a multitude of ensembles including string quartets, electronic contemporary dance music, jazz (both big band and small groups), ambient music, vocal scat jazz, film scores and contemporary pop songs.
In 1982 Terry and the Latin / jazz group Macondo won the Best Young Jazz Musician’s of the year award in London. As a highly acclaimed jazz pianist he appeared many times at London’s prestigious Ronnie Scott’s club opening shows for such jazz icons as McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Jimmy Heath and Monty Alexander. He also played a series of engagements at Peter Ind’s Tenor Clef Club in London with quartets featuring legends Eddie Henderson, John Stubblefield, Cecile Payne, and Urbie Green.
He composed tracks for both of the Grammy Award nominated albums “Reference Point” and “Aart” by British new age jazz group Acoustic Alchemy, with whom he toured and recorded extensively throughout the 80’s and 90’s. He also wrote “the Beautiful Game” for Alchemy – a top ten hit for 16 weeks resulting in a top twenty placement in the “Best Contemporary Jazz Album of 2000” – Billboard Magazine.
As a player and performer Terry was featured soloist with London’s Metropolitan Orchestra on the soundtrack or the film “Beautiful Girls” starring Matt Dillon and Uma Thurman, in which Timothy Hutton played the part of a pianist for whom Terry created the music. He was also featured on soundtracks for “The Ref”, “Showgirls” and “Crime Time” along with Marianne Faithful. In 1997 he composed the music for the motion picture ‘Monument Avenue’, directed by Ted Demme and starring Dennis Leahry.
He collaborated with pop star Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame on a whole range of projects throughout 1992-97. One highlight was opening concerts at 5 Bob Dylan shows in Tokyo in 1997 to an audience of 5,000 people each night – although his largest audience thus far was when he played to 85,000 people with UK ska / reggae band Madness at the Roskilde Festival in Denmark. He was Dave Stewart’s musical director for 5 years, recording 25 albums and 4 major motion picture soundtracks. As a session player in London he was much in demand working on projects with Sir Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Bryan Ferry, Mick Jagger, Brian Wilson, Van Morrison, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Tom Jones and Bon Jovi.
Since 1997 he has lived in San Francisco recording and performing with his own projects, recording three solo albums in amongst his touring schedule, session and arranging work. From 1999 – 2002 he fronted a jazz trio “Three Thinking” at the Ana Mandara - actor Don Johnson’s Vietnamese style club and restaurant. In 2002 he was featured alongside Yellow Jackets musicians Will Kennedy (drums), and Marc Russo (sax), on J Thompson’s CD Romantic Night, and in 2003 he co-wrote the music for the San Francisco Oracle World Convention with Chris Hedge from the Magnetic Poets. Terry performed a solo piano improvisation on this theme to an audience of 15,000 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco accompanied by a state of the art hi-tech laser light display.
Reuniting with his old band mates Acoustic Alchemy (2004-2006) he one again toured America and the UK, this time as Special Guest Artist featuring some of his own material along with tracks from the release “The Best of Acoustic Alchemy.”
Terry formed his own group “The Terry Disley Experience” in 2003 and released the first of a series of albums. The “Experience” album put him firmly on the map in the contemporary jazz radio market and the track “Side to Side” was voted by 17,047 KKSF Radio 103.7 listeners as the best unsigned artist track of the year. He subsequently released the CD’s “Across the Pond” (2006) and “London Underground” (2008).
This latest product “London Underground” was officially released in May 2008 to a sold out show at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco. Terry’s piano pyrotechnics on this CD has been likened to that of Joe Zawinul, McCoy Tyner and Gonzalo Rubalcabo (Keyboard Magazine 2008).

author: Pamela RandallI first heard this group at Shanghai 1930 because I know the Bassist, Daniel, so I bought the CD and I LOVE IT. I brought it home to New Orleans with me and am trying to get them to play a few of the songs here on our radio station. GREAT JOB!!!

FANTASTIC
author: DeNise GordonThis is a wonderful CD. I originally purchased the CD for side to side…I am pleased to find the other songs to be just as good. It is unusual to find the entire CD to be filled with great songs. Terry Disley is a treasure.
In a word 'GREAT'
author: David ReidThe 'Experience' album is great - good variation and quite 'boppy' in areas and a perfect example of smooth jazz. I wish Terry Disley would release more albums - I for one would buy the lot.
The Only CD of jazz music in my collection
author: John A Tuttle - Player-Care.comUntil I heard this CD, I thought I disliked jazz music. My attitude has changed considerably after hearing Terry's tunes. I might even consider buying more jazz music if it's as good as what Terry writes. I may be a neophyte when it comes to jazz, but I believe I know good music when I hear it.
creative, well balanced, easy listening
author: Pat and JohnExperience CD--each selection was very creative with well balanced tone and articulation. We truly enjoyed listening to great jazz.

Don't Miss This Experience
author: AlvinI've been a fan of Terry Disley since I first heard him playing with Acoustic Alchemy. To this date, I still love his organ/synth solo in Cuban Heels (from AA's Reference Point). I was excited to hear about his solo release, and I wasn't disappointed. There are many different styles on this disc, but everything seems to flow together well. One track reminds me of Joe Sample; another reminds me of Tom Grant. All of the compositions are wonderful, as is the musiciansip. And I love the synth solo on Sedona. You won't be disappointed with this "Experience."
Knew it would be good because it was a Terry Disleys CD
author: Rosemary GrahamLiked the variety - music for all tastes
So Smooth
author: J. MonroeI found out about Terry Disley on a smooth jazz station play list. I actually had to do a search on the internet to find where to purchase it. After sampling the first track Three Arabian Nights, it was a must have. His play is fluid and smooth as silk. The popularity of this CD in the smooth jazz genre will only continue to grow as it gets more play time throughout the country in larger markets. No doubt one of the best smooth jazz CD's on ivory in the past 12 months on any label.
A full album of wonderful tracks
author: Jim McCormickNot being much of a jazz fan, I never anticipated that I would run out to get this CD after seeing Terry Disley play live. But that's exactly what happened. Every song on this album is so great, that it's always in my car or playing at my home. This is one CD purchase that you won't regret.

Music that makes you feel happy to be alive!
author: TraceyWhat a fantastic collection of beautiful music! These songs strike chords deep in your soul that make you feel happy to be alive! My favorite is Sedona, which stirs up energy and emotion I didn't know I had until I heard it. I love Terry Disley and this CD is just fabulous! Buy it and send it to your friends and family - they'll thank you!
Just plain fabulous.
author: S. BallI was excited about and had high hopes for my first listen of this CD, after learning Terry Disley is a former member of the group Acoustic Alchemy (one of my all-time favorites). Within fifteen seconds of the first cut I was a dedicated fan. I don't know where Terry's soul has to travel in order to generate this kind of music, but what he brings back with him to share with the rest of us is phenominal. I can only imagine that everyone will love it! If I don't listen to this CD every day, I actually miss it.
terry disley, the real deal!
author: jeff eatonwow! i picked up the new Terry Disley cd the other day after hearing his song-'Side to Side' on KKSF, which I learned got first place in the voting in the new artist competition. I knew I liked that song, but wasnt sure what I would be getting with the rest of the cd. Well, I sure am plesantly surprised. There are some driving songs, like I was expecting knowing that Terry spent all those years with Acoustic Alchemy(another favorite of mine) and his piano chops are on display throughout. He obviously knows his axe very well. Some of my favorite tunes on the cd were: Are You the One?,Slam Dunk,Smooth Sailing, and a tune with a cool sense of urgency: Sedona. ...But you gotta check out his ballad playing, especially the last track:Romance Dance. Wow, that one gave me goose bumps! Its a beautiful conversation between his great piano playing and the sax player,Alex Murzyn. What a great tune! The on should be a hit.. a big, big hit. If you haven't heard it yet, check this guy out! His is definitely the-real deal!!
