::Hiders Reviews::
" A truely remarkable band, a great live experience, tons of great songs...The Hiders are real contenders. They bridge the musical gap as well as any band I've heard in a long, long time..."
Dan Reed WXPN/WorldCafe'
.... very musically robust Americana ...that reminds me of Sparklehorse, Emmylou Harris, The Band, Kathleen Edwards, Detroyer, and folkie psychedelia of early VU.
....Anchored with Beth Harris's sweet yet aching harmonies, the album balances slow-burning love songs and full on rockers. Mesmerizing stuff.
Bruce Warren - WXPN
...Hovering in the Americana-sphere around artists from Neil Young and The Band to newer acts like Sparklehorse and The Thrills, Valentine is, in a word, mesmerizing. On opener "Everything I Wanted," Toby Ellis offers pedal steel swells that illuminate like a sunrise, wrapping around Alletzhauser's organic, melancholic melodies and Harris' perfect harmonies (she is Emmylou to Alletzhauser's Neil). There is a natural hypnotic glaze to most of tracks, as the acoustic and electric guitars and the sweeping rhythms combine to create a billow of irresistible ethereality.
...Other highlights on the album include the Greek mythology-referencing "Persephone," which rattles the cage a little more than most tracks with its distorted, lost-in-the-woods-at-night guitar stomp; the trembling, gently-rolling lullaby for a departing lover "Magic Show"; the twilight-twinkling "You Can't Hurt Me Anymore"; and "Bury Me," which recalls the earlier roots-rockin' days of Wilco. But highlights, shmilights there isn't a dud in the bunch here. The songs are full of drama and soul, possessing an imposing majesty and a vibe of sober sorrow that makes Valentine a perfect "shoulder to cry on" CD for anyone going through a soul-crushing breakup.
Mike Breen CITYBEAT
...The CD is a tremendous collection of brooding electric folk, alt country and slow-burn rock tunes that feature Alletzhauser's Neil Young-esque pleading nasal vocals, full of innocence and passion.

Valentine
author: carolineThis is so beautiful, I want to give this album to everyone I know!
valentine
author: jtVery Gestalt. I know it's an abused term, but this wonderfully subltle, yet it still has an edge. The lyrics and acoustics are separate components, yet each is seriously considered, explored and combined for a very haunting and refreshing sound. It's so nice to hear really expressive music without the vocalist coughing up a lung.
An album to dream to beneath the stars
author: Leigh WalklettIt took Beth to turn me onto this band. And as a recent convert I am forever grateful, for hearing these timeless melodies allows me to dream. The melancholy lyrics and vocals are haunting. In all, this is a mesmerising album. Thank you.
Cool, laid back roots rock. Great sound.
author: KreeusReminds me of Neil Young from the seventies. Lots of acoustic guitar and harmonica. This is a good CD, you should check it out.
Good lord these guys are great
author: Nic PowersOne of my favorite albums in years.
Best new CD I've heard in a long time.
author: laura mcleanThe Hiders "Valentine" is the best new CD I've heard in a long time. Good lyrics and music, nice harmonies. While I'm sure they're tired of being compared to Neil Young, I would consider that pretty high praise as an artist, and they're more than just faux Neil. They definitely have their own identity. I hope to be buying many Hiders CD's.
Great CD that reminds me of some old Neil Young sounds.
author: BobI'm so glad I was listening to WKZE 98.1 NY radio station that day I first heard The Hiders. Excellent CD to just kick back and relax to. Hurry up with CD number 2.
timeless
author: beththis cd is a technically awesome which makes listening to the it pure joy. the tracks are emotional and heartfelt. the vocal harmonies are sweet, mixed with soulful instrumentals. this cd is timelss
Excellent! Echoes of early Neil Young and the folk scene!
author: JerryAn excellent album from beginning to end! At times strongly reminiscent of early Neil Young and the golden age of folk music but with their own stamp. No sour notes anywhere and the steel guitar is a nice addition. Highly recommended!
with all the stars i hand to you there is no need for the sun.

My summer soundtrack
author: J.I can't stop listening to this cd. Heard you at Canal Street Tavern in Dayton. Forget Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy" as the song of the summer. For me, it's "Into the Sun," "Persephone," "Hawaiian Ice" ... the whole cd really. Last year it was Spoon's "Gimme Fiction," 2004: DBT's "Decoration Day." This year "Valentine!"
::thanks::

author: Barbara StorckI'm enjoying the cd "The hiders" very much. I'm a grandmom that has 4 young adult children and it's fun when I find a good cd and turn them on to it. Keep on rockin!
lovin' it
author: Jamie C. MartinStill lovin' the CD, bought 2 more (the 1st 2 were gifts). I'm keeping one, and sending one to my dad, who will also enjoy. I spent the 4th of July weekend playing the CD for friends on the way to our camping site and they enjoyed it, as well.
Great album
author: PietThe record is melting pot of music from great musicians like Alexander Spence, Neil Young, Moby Grape etc. Especially You cant hurt me anymore and into the sun are splendid.
Great new band channels Neil.
author: RobWith Neil Yong being so prolific lately, I wasn't sure how I'd react to this Hiders CD, which is clealrly inspired by Neil Young's legacy. Would it be simply ersatz Neil, or something more. I'm happy to report it's a wonderful recording.
One listen and you'll be hooked
author: LisaLearned about them via WXPN.org; listened to the first and last songs, and loved them. Somewhat like the Jayhawks or perhaps Whiskeytown. Pedal steel, fiddle, great harmonies..... Bought the disk. Like it lots, but feel the first and last songs are my favorites. The others are a bit darker and slower. All in all, a very strong disk and I look forward to others.
Great CD!
author: Jamie C. MartinLOVE the CD, am sending it to family & friends. Your lyrics and music really speak to me!
- author: Sara
Thank you for putting one out - looking forward to the next one!
Enjoying
author: KatI think it's a sweet collection of songs that are happy and sad and that make me want to hang out with some good friends and some good beer - preferably outside on a warm summer evening/night.
A Very Seductive Melancholy
author: ShannipotsAlthough one could easily file this album under Americana, the Hiders have deconstructed the genre so deftly that what is left is startlingly subtle, intelligent, and unpretentious. Valentine is utterly devoid of cliches, predictable lyrics, and trite musical expressions. Alletzhauser's lyrics and voice make one feel lonely and nostalgic in the best way.
An afternoon on the porch swing.
author: Mrs. Shreck(excerpt)...Neil Young. Yep. I hear it, you'll hear it, The Hiders hear it...Here's three songs worth singling out (pun intended): Everything I Wanted is a great song to lead the album. It's nicely bittersweet and melancholy. I'm partial to that pedal steel which I think is very inventively played, Mr. Ellis. I think the stars will be closer for people who give this song a careful listening. If you have everything you wanted, this song reminds you to hold it with care. My favorite track, Bury Me, is quite towards the end. This may mean that it's not anyone else's favorite, which would be par for the Shreck course. I think this should be number one with a bullet. I love it!...My second favorite is You Can't Hurt Me Anymore. Headphones required. The Hiders might make some of that emo money on this one. ...Valentine has been a grower for me. I've always been a love-at-first-listen sort of girl; something either smacks me upside the head or it's tossed in the sell-back pile. Lately, I've had a few experiences (Wilco, Modest Mouse) that have made me question that approach (though the Strokes supported it, oh well...). Sure, I'm still always looking for the next true-love-at-first-sound and once in awhile one comes around (The Handsome Family)....So why don't you order [Valentine] up and put it on and sit on the porch swing with a beer or a Coke or a Hawaiian ice, and watch the local children running in the sun and laughing. It did me good, and it's do you good, too.
