Lisa Theunissen (pronounced ‘Tennyson’) is a South African born singer-songwriter, and made the UK her home ten years ago. Over this time Lisa has honed her songwriting skills and developed her stagecraft; performing at a number of well-known venues on the London and South East England circuit, making a name for herself and gaining the respect within the music industry and from musicians and songwriters along the way.
In 2007, Lisa decided make music her full-time career by recording a debut album, forming a band, playing more live shows and preparing to embark on the long, hard road to wider recognition on her journey to success.
* Lisa was nominated for nominated 'Best Pop Rock Act' in the Exposure Music Awards (sponsored by TourDates.co.uk).
* Independently releasing the debut album, HerStory, in May 2008 via electronic distribution through http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/theunissen on iTunes: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playListId=278657583 and physical distribution for Amazon achieved critical acclaim, was featured by Amazon in June in their list of 'New and Emerging Artists for 2008' and achieved some good sales.
* Off to a flying start, HerBand was then invited to play GuilFest 2008 and Vivienne Westwood generously sponsored her designs. This first major ticket festival was a big success with three performances over the weekend, which were well received resulting in new fans and interest from radio, promoters and press.
* Since GuilFest 2008, HerBand have supported Never The Bride, played at The Pigalle Club and various summer festivals, and Lisa scored a nomination for 'Best Female Solo Artist' at the Guildford Brits Awards, from her local area.
The latter part of 2008 is set to be busy writing and recording a second album with HerBand: Charlie, Peter and Jon. Plans are still in motion for announcing release dates of the singles, album and nation-wide tour, supported by press and radio appearances.

"We heard the debut performance from Lisa Theunissen whose beautiful voice floated through the packed basement as she played some great piano at the same time." Tony Moore at the Kashmir Klub, 7th December 2002
"Great voice and songs" David Stark from SongLink, at The Bedford for the Songbirds Showcase, 19th November 2006
"All the songs were her own well constructed compositions, and she was at home in every tempo and genre." Peter Coulston, LAST WEEK IN LONDON - Here Come the Girls, Seatwave, 31 March 2008
"What struck me immediately was her astonishing voice. It’s as rich and sultry as a smoky blues lounge but simultaneously raw and emotional; bare as a room stripped of everything but the grand piano. Thankfully, Lisa is also an outstanding songwriter, a talent that comes to the fore especially on the slower songs. HerStory is a well-balanced mix of styles and emotions, but I reckon it’s the ballads that will make Lisa a household name." Christo Valentyn, Mamba Online - Album Review of HerStory – Lisa Theunissen, May 2008
"A soulful voice with plenty of range and accompanying herself on the piano, she had the audience entranced from the start." Lisa's Soulful Showcase at the Fox and Pelican, Grayshott, Tuesday 1 July - Live Gig Review by Vic Cracknell, Published in Petersfield Post, 9 July 2008
"Her lyrics are heartfelt, her sound is full of rhythm and her voice is silky-smooth - a grittier and more soulful Norah Jones." Charlotte Talbot, Woking Review Newspaper, 5 July 2008, HerStory, Debut Album Review: Soulful Answers to Life's Ups and Downs

Yep, astonishing voice
author: JamieLike the review up there says, Theunissen has an amazing voice, rich and sensous and smooth. I had a listen just for the "chocolate in a smoky blues bar at midnight" line, and for once the headline is true - that's exactly what this is like. It isn't jazz, but anyone who likes jazz should appreciate the vocals. The album's worth having just for that. The actual music is pop-jazz and light rock, think Norah Jones, especially early Norah, if Norah sometimes stood up and did a bit of rock too.
