Three Colors CD Retrospective, One Big CD, Out Now!!!

Three Colors, one of the premier bands that help make the Boston music scene legendary in the 1980s, has a long-awaited CD retrospective in stores this week. Entitled One Big CD, this 19 song effort features the entire self-titled debut ep, most all of the second album (This is Norwood) and a host of rare and previously unreleased tracks. Besides mainstays such as One Big Tree, Next and Raise The Roof, there are many gems to discover like the non lp single In Orbit and the previously unreleased Mac and Martha and One More Shovel Full Of Love. The video for One Big Tree is also included on this CD so fans can watch It on their computers.

Three Colors was formed in 1981 at Connecticut College in New London and relocated to Boston shortly thereafter. The group emerged as one of the major forces in the Boston music scene and had a breakout hit with One Big Tree from their debut. Word travelled fast across the pond and the group relocated for a while to England where they recorded, This Is Norwood. Upon their return the band continued to enjoy regional success with airplay and coverage in all area papers and magazines. Inexplicably the band never broke out nationally and after a seven year run finally called it a day in late 1988 and, for the most part, are still good friends. In fact, Chris and Hub have continued to work on projects together including Chris' 1992 Elektra debut Be Headed and the 1998 CD, HUB, released on Slash/London and produced by Chris. Dana, of course, went on to rock stardom with Boston's own Morphine.

From the opening notes of One Big Tree the listener will be brought right back in time. Twenty years have passed since the heyday of Three Colors but the music sounds just as fresh today as it did then.

    Well..where to start? Just a great album if you like catchy, upbeat and positive works. Musically reminding me of Toronto's Bare Naked Ladies, the early years. Big Tree, Next, Sitting Pretty, Red Room, Raise the Roof and Shovel/Love are my fav's. Growing up down the street in the 80's I couldn't appreciate them until re-listening to the music almost 25 years later...Chris & Hub, y'all were really great shits to us...Morgan, John and myself. As I listen to the music, the memories flood back of funny times and the goodness you exuded to us...thanks! I'm glad I never forgot y'all. Best of luck, don't be a stranger and look forward to seeing you guys again before we get too old!

    I new this guys briefly in NJ in the 'eighties when they stopped by to get food at a place where my band was playing at an open-mic night. They were friendly and supportive, and I enjoyed seeing them live a few times later on. It's a pleasure to hear this stuff again.

    I saw these guys a dozen or so times over the years. First time was a WFNX show at the Paradise in Boston. (1985, I think.) The guys were on the bill with O Positive. What a great night. I drove down from Portland Maine with a friend to see the guys. The show was worth it. It would be every other time I saw them. On listening to the CD, I'm reminded of well Chris and Hub's songwriter balanced each other out. I'd forgotten how much I liked Max's songwriting, too. And it's really great to be reminded that Dana had some fierce skills on the sax even then. OK guys... is there going to be a reunion next?

    I can't believe it's been 20 years. I met these guys in Princeton NJ, and carried their music with me into NYC. I saw them every chance I could, even in road trips to Boston. A damp PA basement put an end to my collection of 3 Colors tapes and LPs, so I'm ecstatic to have another opportunity to own it again. It may be 20 years later, but the music is still amazingly fresh and irresistibly infectious. (I love that Mac and Martha is part of this collection; a favorite I'm not sure I had previously.) It's a mystery why these creative geniuses didn't rocket to national attention. They were huge in my book! Robin loves Three Colors -- and CD Baby!

  • What a trip down memory lane!

    Wore the original EP record out when I was a DJ at my college radio station (WRFT - Temple U - Ambler, PA)in the late 80's! So glad you put all of this material on CD! Listening to this really takes me back to those days. Remember seeing them live at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly in 87 or 88. It was a Tuesday night and I was one of like 10 people there. It was like having my own private concert! Best live song that night was One More Shovel Full of Love. Never thought I'd hear that song again until I bought the CD. THANKS! PS: I was always a huge Morphine fan too, and I never made the sax player connection until I got this CD! No wonder I liked Morphine so much!

    This CD is great! Brings me back to my BU days when we were seeing 3 Colors play at TT's and The Channel. As ever, they have a timeless unique style and catchy tunes that stay in your head even after the cd is over. Thanks for releasing these on CD, guys!
