Silent Running follows hot on the heels of Fields of England; its focus is human relationships and, perhaps, a sense of yearning coupled with spiritual revelation. Melodic and passionate (as Fields of England) with thoughtful lyrics.

We've been listening to the CD and feedback = EXCELLENT!
Excellent songs - good structure, nice melodies, nice use of various instruments (love the flute & piano interaction and percussion).
Excellent playing - you're a multi-instrumental man!!!
Excellent production - sounds very professional
Nice one

'Silent Running' is an interesting companion to its recent predecessor 'Fields of England'. The two collections have a similar sound and feel; each is clearly a labour of love (a reference to the sleeve notes for 'Silent Running'), and each is romantic in how it deals with its subjects: whilst 'FoE' deals mainly with England and its heritage, 'SR' focuses on the love for and between individual people, as best illustrated by the CD's opening track 'My Boy'.

The instrumentation, consisting of guitars, keyboards, flute, bass and drums, provided by Mr. Bragg himself, does much to augment a simplistic style of writing. Any unexpected twists and turns appear within the accompaniment rather than the songs themselves, and the acoustic guitars in particular might even be considered to be adding too much clutter by today's standards, although this is balanced by the seemingly in vogue occasional repetition of vocal phrases. Despite this, the lyrics are portrayed with the same passion that comes across on 'FOE'.

The use of a keyboard to produce the drum parts - drums are Mr. Bragg's main instrument - and both the style and the sound of the drumming are oddly reminiscent of that created by Mick Fleetwood, circa 'Tusk'. The better-than-demo standard but not-too-polished quality of these recordings give the collection a warmth and even a certain charm which one hopes Mr. Bragg wouldn't struggle to maintain if he found himself in the hands of outside producers.

The vocal phrasing is reminiscent of Phil Lynott - the production is thin though this gives a certain charm; the songs are excellent but probably need the attention of a top producer. Interesting lyrical content.
