notes

Named 2000's "BEST DISCOVERY" in roots/Americana music by the Chicago Sun-Times, "BEST of INDY" singer-writers by Indianapolis Monthly, and winner of the Just Plain Folks Music Award for Best Traditional Folk Song (opening track- "Better Days"), south-central Indiana singer-songwriter, actor, and hay farmer, Tim Grimm has released a new recording entitled Heart Land.

"He masterfully works his words like a farmer works the soil for a deeply involving, superbly crafted harvest of nine original songs, along with the traditional "Sowin' On The Mountain", and A.P. Carter's "Carter's Blues".....
These days most songwriters rhapsodize about mountains and oceans, sometimes rivers and lakes. Grimm gives the heartland it's due. You should do the same for Tim Grimm."
Rich Warren, SING OUT/ "The Midnight Special"

Recorded by David Webber at Airtime Studios in Bloomington, IN and utilizing some of the region's finest musicians-(Dan Lodge-Rigal, Jason Wilber, Jamey Reid, Jack Helsley and Gordon Lowry to name a few) Heart Land is about going home again, about honoring the family, the farm and the vanishing landscape of the rural and small town Midwest. This is music for readers of Wendell Berry, Gene Logsdon, Wes Jackson and others who evoke the down-to-earth American traditions and values of respecting the land, living simply, taking pleasure in physical labor, and acting as neighbors. This is an acoustic album with simple, straightforward production, with Grimm recording the bulk of his tracks live .

The album is guitar-centered with light touches of piano and fiddle, with occasional cello, mandolin, and banjo also working themselves into the mix. Bass and percussion blend seamlessly into the framework of each tune they're a part of. But the heart of the album are the vocals-- Grimm's rich, honest voice--alone, or blending with just the right harmonies.

These are songs that recognize that the roots of 'country' and 'folk' music are virtually the same. While the term "urban folk" has become an increasingly popular descriptive, Grimm's music is firmly planted in pastoral terrain, and is populated by neighbors and rural folk who still hold to sets of values that are out of fashion.
From the heart of Indiana, the songs are full of wisdom without setting out to be wise-- and it is the wisdom of simple satisfactions. 9 out of 11 tunes are Grimm originals. The traditional tune, Sowin' on the Mountain which he learned from friend Ramblin' Jack Elliott, builds with a rousing chorus, and Carter's Blues , a lesser-known Carter family tune, has been stripped down to a vocal duet with one guitar.

Points of Note:This is Grimm's first release in 8 years. A successful career in film and television sidetracked his musical aspirations, and not until he returned to the Midwest with his family, did he find the place once again to write from the heart. He is a previous finalist in Musician Magazine's Best Unsigned Band contest, a winner in the Midwest region's Marlboro Country Round-Up, and has traveled and played with friend, Jack Elliott. Songs from Heart Land have won awards in The John Lennon Songwriting Contest and The Great American Songwriting Competition. He has appeared in half a dozen feature films, most notably Clear and Present Danger, opposite Harrison Ford, and most recently The Insider. He has worked on numerous television shows and his work as a stage actor in the last few years has earned much critical acclaim.

"a superb work, probably one of the best efforts I've heard from an American songwriter in recent times...every song is a gem."
--Massimo Ferro, Radio Voce Spazio, Italy

"Not only a terrific country-folk singer (think of a mellow Bruce Springsteen with the sincerity and clarity of Johnny Cash), but also a compelling, observant songwriter who understands how to balance the personal and the universal..."
--Indianapolis Monthly

Everything is outstanding: music, lyrics & harmonies. Highly recommended!

  • original and facinating

I heard Tim Grimm in concert and immediately sent for this CD. There is very little difference between the live versions and these studio versions. Every one of the songs is better than the last, it's next to impossible to have a 'favorite' song here. It feels intimate, as though he is sitting across the kitchen table, telling stories that are old and yet give up something new each time. The addition of Jason Wilber on two songs adds to the excellent, yet unobtrusive arrangements. This is an AWESOME CD.

  • 80 acres is why i bought it
    author: a

Saw Tim Grimm live, that 80 acres song was sung that night, and not available for sale - that song grabbed me more than any other he sang in concert

  • Takes me back to the old days

Several songs on this album really hit home with me. I grew up in that era, remember a lot of what he's singing about. Mine was the dustbowl in Texas, but the feelings are all the same. Very well done. Thanks.

  • Got it because of J. LaCombe's review. Wonderful!!

Makes one remember what story telling is all about in music.

  • Stunning in its pure beauty and emotion.
    author: Jim LaCombe

Have only been listening to, playing, and thinking about music since my first garage band in 1963. I was stunned by the beauty, clarity, simplicity, and purity of every graceful line, every heartfelt note. Absolutely the best thing I've heard in a long, long time, and I've heard a lot of great music.

  • Heart tugging lyrics, heart warming guitar, satifying breaks.
    author: Randy Cheyne

Tim is the conscience I want. Heartland particularly makes me unwind, take that deep breath, and remember important things like family, friends and childhood. His lyrics describe people you think you know and the instrumentation and chord progressions breathe life into every verse.

  • Music to my heart!
    author: Dawn Bush

Every song on this CD is a poem with music! In the area of lyrics Bruce Springsteen has nothing on Tim Grimm. We have been big Springsteen fans for years ... Heart Land says "move over Bruce"!

  • Tim's lyrics paint beautiful portraits for everyone to see.
    author: Mike Cloghessy

Originially from Indiana, Tim Grimm's Heartland has me reminiscing about my life growing up with family, friends and values you can hang your hat on. I don't believe I will ever tire of listening to this CD. Although the lyrics are the same the lifetime of emotions and memories they evoke are not. A truly great work!

  • author: Pam

Love the songs, and Tim's voice. I took the cd to work and listen to it while walking around the city during my lunch break. There is traffic and noise and confusion all around me, but the music coming through the headphones takes me to a nicer, more relaxing place. It's a great getaway for my mind while my body is stuck in a more stressful place.

  • One of the best CDs I ever purchased
    author: Rose

The title of this CD sure fits the songs--they take you right to the heart of stuff that really matters. The talent on this album is just unbelieveable. I do not have words to tell what I think about this album--I love the accoustics, I love the words to the songs--there is not one thing I would change.

HeartLand,is justly titled. One of those cds that stay in your player and in your mind and HEART.

  • Songwriter extraordinaire!
    author: Jack Gubanc

Tim Grimm is a singer/songwriter who has the ability to write songs where each captures the moment in time he is discussing and leaves the listener with a strong impression as though the listener had been included in the experience. In the tradition of Woody Guthrie, Hank Williams, Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt, Tim Grimm is a true troubador and teller of stories. Tim songs follow the axiom that in telling a story in song "less is more." A quality album that you will listen to often!

  • one of the best singer/songwrites to sprout from the Midwest in many years
author: Tom Lounges, Midwest Beat Magazine

"One of the best singer/songwriters to sprout from the Midwest in many years...The way this talented artist can paint pictures dripping of time-honored Americana images with his words, can not help but evoke comparisons from Woody Guthrie and Steve Goodman to Nebraska-era Bruce Springsteen....HEART LAND is a truely wonderful collection of songs from a true remarkable talent...

  • in a class with some very elite company- Cash, Nelson, Haggard...
    author: Bloomington Independent (heidi Drockelman)

Grimm's voice is the portal that lets you into his way of life, and the lives of his neighbors who live and breathe in his songs. There are really no words to describe THAT VOICE. It is distinct, rich, full of experience, and puts Grimm in a class with some very elite company- Cash, Nelson, Haggard, to name a few.
