notes
One of the most interesting facets of The Awakening is that many of Philadelphia’s musical favorites and talents currently stampeding the arts scene have all come together to record and add their spice to Traycee Lynn's cd. Whether it be background vocals, instruments, or music production (ranging from the cello, guitar, bass, drums, calimbo, djembe, and so on) the listener will get a unique exposure to Philly's sound today and a sneak peak at where Philly's sound is headed.
Among those contributing to this project include international trumpeter Jafar Barron (who featured on the debut albums of Jill Scott and Erykah Badu), nationally known guitarist Gabrielle Guma of Tangible Truth and several more.
"THE MUSIC IS...FUN, SEXY, YET INTELLECTUAL"
Traycee Lynn, international songstress, emcee and budding producer is the latest wave to burst through Philadelphia’s underground. This highly anticipated cd goes from soul to hip-hop with spurts of rock and spoken word in a “fun, sexy, yet intellectual” hypnotic way that makes the cd an instant classic on the rise.
SOUNDS LIKE:
Vocally compared to Erykah Badu, Lynn's honey alto voice is soothing and hypnotic. A rare and extremely gifted songwriter, Traycee Lynn's lyrics reflect an old soul reminiscent of Marvin Gaye and Lauryn Hill, yet skillfully modernized with the hip-hop storytelling finesse of Nas.
INSPIRED BY:
Outside of her music, Lynn provides a powerful platform for artists and writers through her independent publication called Writer Blocks, a Philadelphia-based magazine “for artists-by artists” where Lynn claims much of her influence for this project was inspired by the artists she interviewed in 2005-2006 including Common, Jaguar Wright, Floetry, Saul Williams, Van Hunt and more.
“When I started recording for this project, I just did what I felt like doing. I wasn’t thinking of genre boxes or record deals. I just wanted to create and be myself. I ended up mixing different genres but they still have that common denominator of soul to them. As a result, snippets from the Writer Blocks interviews were added to help transition from soul to hip-hop, or from rock to soul, and so on,” comments Lynn who credits venues like October Gallery and the Philadelphia International Art Expo as grooming venues for her songwriting.
FEARLESS TO BE DIFFERENT
Fearless of stepping out, exploring and mixing genres, Lynn may have accidentally started on a new brand of soul and hip-hop…
“I titled the cd The Awakening because I wanted to awaken music, musicians, and writers…I wanted them to remember the power and responsibility of music, and how it could make us feel and think. I didn’t feel we had that anymore, at least not in mainstream, and I'm hoping to breakthrough with this project…sounding the alarm.”

No More Sleep
author: the whisperOf all the gems Philly has laid into the laps of listeners this year, this is indeed the most well polished from package to content. Traycee Lynn's smooth vocals float over fluid beats. A wide range of musicians and singers combine adding extra flavor to already phenomenal lyrics provided by Traycee Lynn. Misty Sol and Rahnda Rize's vocals pump added soul into Salted Wounds and I Want Him. Traycee Lynne conquers a range of topics as eclectic as her talents. Using her buttery vocals, the story telling ability of an emcee, and the lyrical prowess of a spoken word artist Lynn weaves tales of love, pain, truth, and reality as well as channels the ancestors. A wonderful marriage of words and sounds, which is beginning to be the trademark of projects touched by the production of Dap Stallion. Every once and a while the underground chooses to come upstairs. This is one of those times.

Nurturing for the Soul
author: Junior, WKDU 91.7FMA newcomer to the soul scene, Traycee Lynn is ready to take center stage. On her recent release The Awakening, she makes a powerful impression with her soft voice. Her lyrics are not watered down for consumption but refreshing and nurturing for the soul.
I didn't know an album could sound this damn good !
author: Damali“Make the music...the music of my mind...” From the searing hot vocal blasts of the first track to the remix of the last track. This CD is a masterpiece of true and pure “Soul Hop”. Traycee cleverly takes you on a musical journey into the inner recesses’s of her musical spirit. With the ease and comfort of your favorite pajamas, Traycee explores almost every musical genre ( short of country) with a commanding prowess. Tracks like “the music of my mind” with its wall of layered vocal sounds and “Relax unwind” with it’s caressing undertones and throbbing beat make for enjoyable mainstream nourishment My personal favorites are the underground, incredibly artistic joints which showcases Traycee’s inner genius. Tracks like “Middle Passage”, “Video Whore” & “Your Actions” are the most stellar and significantly creative tracks to come from the “Philadelphia sound” since Gamble & Huff! When Traycee rocks? She rocks! When Traycee wants to spit fire? Flames erupt from the Woofer and Tweeters. Throw in snippets from some of all of our favorite established artists like Common, Saul Williams, Jaguar Wright etc. and you have an emotional ghost trapped on disc. I personally heard a lot of comparisons of this album to Eryka Badu’s “Momma Gun”. O’k at the first sonic glance I can understand. However, when you really delve into the lyrical content, immense spirituality and overall outstanding production of “The Awakening”? This album with only a fraction of the budget that Eryka had, is superior. Traycee’s unique vocal stylings has an honesty and appeal that vocalists would die for. Because to sum it up, Traycee has enslaved the one technique/gift that almost every artist in every genre craves for. The ability to sing/speak to the people and not at them.

Organic Soul Album
author: Soul Brother Records, LondonSweet voiced singer/writer/journalist Traycee hails from Philadelphia (sounds a little bit like Erykah) makes a good organic soul album with an edge interspersed with extract from interviews with people like Jaguar Wright, Common, Saul Williams etc. ‘Music Of my Mind’ is the albums highlight an uplifting mid tempo groover which really hits the spot. ‘Salted Wounds’ and ‘Relax Unwind’ are nice acoustic Badu style catchy mid tempo ditty’s and the unusual ‘Video Whore’ , ‘Without The Tears’ and ‘I Don’t Have to Be Right’ are also worth checking. The Spoken Word ‘Bloody Waters’ and ‘Middle Passage’ are lyrically strong with good grooves. Some of the language is explicit – unsuitable for children.
Like honey on plush carpet...soft, sweet and a little sticky!
author: Misty SolTraycee Lynn's voice is like honey, her melodies stick to you. They get under your skin. And the lyrics (WOW) are so candid, clever and insightful. This one will definitely put Philly back on the map!
