notes

Dark Side of the Moon A Cappella" is an all-vocal version of Pink Floyd's magnum opus "Dark Side of the Moon." No instruments were used in the recording of this unique version of the album. Eight singers and one "vocal percussionist" (similar to a beatboxer) recreate the original work in its entirety.

The album was recorded in High Definition, without breaks between the tracks (as in the original), and is as close to the original in timing as possible, thus preserving its "Wizard of Oz Compatibility." Produced and mixed by the renowned a cappella Producer, Freddie Feldman, and mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Doug Sax, this recording breaks new ground in both the worlds of a cappella and rock.

Singers: Stephanie Lewin, Jennifer Feucht, Melissa Smithson, Jon Krivitzky, Michael Mahler, Chris Feucht, Alan Schmuckler, Dan Riley, and Freddie Feldman. Music arranged by: Jon Krivitzky.

Nominated for Best Album, Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award (CARA) 2006.

  • Masterpiece

I would've thought that "dark side of the moon" would be pretty odd (or bad) choice for an a cappella performance, what with all the sound effects. But these guys seemed to have thought otherwise, did it and did an excellent job. The imitation of ringing cash registers at the start of 'money' is pretty ingenious. I am particularly amazed by the percussion on all the songs - far too realistic. CDbaby.com's great service also deserves a mention - my copy was cracked when I received it - one phone call and the replacement was on its way the same day. Many thanks! :) Oh and it is my sixth copy of Dark Side of the Moon.

  • A great work
    author: Pepijn Verlaan

The original is unsurmountable, but this does a great job in replicating it. I am however missing some new interpretation. Now it's just a unique way of performing the music, it could have been even more.

  • MAGNIFICENT !!!
    author: TACOMEDIA.DE / Holger F. Kortz

This a cappella interpretation of Pink Floyd's best album is a gift from heaven. Over the years I have collected several versions of Dark Side Of The Moon from Japan, Russia and other countries but this recording is the icing on the cake. The CD has been delivered from USA to Germany within one week! Superb! And now, I am waiting for Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" and Mike Oldfield's "Turbular Bells" made by VOCOMOTION. ;o)

  • Very Brave - and so nearly Brilliant

This is a fantastic attempt to pull off a terrific idea - reproduce Dark Side of the Moon using only the human voice. The vocal percussion is so good it's unbelievable! I had a stand-up argument with my granddaughter, who is a drummer and wouldn't believe there was no percussion on this album. Ironically, the main reason I'm only giving this only 4 stars is because of the vocals, which just don't do justice to the original. If you're a Floyd fan, it's well worth a listen - but I have to confess I preferred Walt Wagner's In The Pink.

  • Unbelievable

The best album in the world re-recorded in a quite unique and amazing fashion. I was impressed from the short clips provided but the rest of the album blew me away, thank you so much for such an awesome rendition :-)

A friend originally let me borrow his copy and it was while searching for it on the internet I came across CDBaby. This is an unbelievable album with excellent singers, production, mixing and engineering. BUY IT.

  • amazing, incredible

I first heard this album from an illegal download (tch! Tch!). However I was so impressed with what I was hearing I just had to have the REAL THING, despite not being able to purchase from mainline UK stores and websites. Totally blown away I have recommended it to all my friends, as well as totally bugging them by playing it all the time. Many hanks to all the vocallists for giving me so much pleasure.

  • Ridiculous!
    author: Brandon

Is this really humanly possible? I find myself continuously amazed. This cd has spent more continuous play time in my car than any other in recent history. The only downside is that only good headphones at high volumes do it justice, otherwise you miss a great deal of the subtlety that makes it so incredible. Once again, this cd is ridiculously good. I was pleasantly surprised.

  • Amazing combination of voices
    author: Norma Mortimer

This is one of the most amazing CDs I have heard this year. I never thought that Dark Side of the Moon could possibly translate into a cappella vocals, but it has been done and been done well. I am humbled by the musicianship I hear on this CD

  • From a review at Jambands.com
    author: Randy ray

Somehow this gaggle of voices makes it all work without a hint of cheese or cringe. A good pair of headphones helps quite a bit. What is perhaps most noteworthy is that the voices chiming in from ten different directions with superhuman rainbow colors make one appreciate the musicality of the thang again. This work was rooted in lyrical thematic passages centered upon the human condition. Work, time, relationships, paranoia, sanity, currency and the inner space of Here Comes Everymodernman filled the platter overflowing with amazing sound effects. Somehow, the voices on this new machineless recording conjure up the odd Moon cataclysm without much missed or abandoned. The real test for my jaded ears came in the swirling colors of “On the Run,” the comical handling of the clocks during the opening of “Time,” the sublime reading of “The Great Gig in the Sky,” and the twin masterpiece segment scored with taste, humor and pathos -- “Us and Them > Any Colour You Like.” “Brain Damage > Eclipse” follows as it does on the original with goosebumps and glory and pomp and circumstance as the whole legion of voices roar towards a tumbling, rollicking conclusion. This is where the payoff comes: a lone voice that sounds exactly like David Gilmour opens “Eclipse” -- a note of genius considering that this twisting splash in the Waters of the Floyd version sounds fantastic when it eventually joins the final chorus which lands one back on earth.

  • Groundbreaking material!
    author: Alex W

This work truly pushes the limits of a cappella and the human voice. The wonderful performances and the high production value make this one of the best a cappella works out there. "Dark Side" could possibly be THE hardest work out there to make a cappella. I wonder what's next from these folks... Congratulations!

  • An interest provoking sound experience.
    author: Michael Grimm

When I initally heard that there was going to be an acapella version of Dark Side I asked why. But, I am very impressed with the vocals, vocal percussion, and how it has kept true to the original (with minor variations to showcase the vocal nature of their performance). Overall, it is definately something that should be listened to and enjoyed.

  • Just amazing
