Back in the '70s, WAIL was a popular band from Rochester, NY, playing clubs and concerts throughout the northeastern United States and Canada. Their fans were loyal and would sometimes follow them hundreds of miles from one gig to the next. It was not unusual to see fans from Toronto at a WAIL gig in New York City. They were a hard rock band playing all original music in night clubs, and making a decent living doing it; quite an accomplishment, considering they never had a record deal.
One loyal fan, Mark Cole from Syracuse, had his own tape recorder and would plug it directly into WAIL's sound board whenever they played his home town. Recently, Mark had these old recordings transferred from analog to digital, and presented them to Bob Murray, WAIL's lead singer/frontman. Bob, in turn, handed the recordings over to Dave Munkhoff, WAIL's lead guitarist (who has a home recording studio in Cocoa, Florida), to do some editing. Meanwhile, Bob's wife remembered seeing an old tape somewhere in the attic. The tape turned out to be a basement recording of self-produced demos, recorded around 1976, at Bob's old house. Once transferred to digital, the basement tapes were sent to Dave for some editing. As a result, this 2 CD set contains highlights from both the live recordings and the basement tapes. Featuring the third and longest lasting incarnation of WAIL:
Bob Murray (lead vocals, keyboards & harmonica)
Dave Barnes (drums, lead & backup vocals)
Rinehart Straub (electric violin, backup vocals)
Dale Croston (bass & backup vocals)
Dave Munkhoff (lead guitar)

Well as a teenager in Buffalo I would always go see Wail play wnen ever they came to town..always a fun band live,if they werent playing I would go see Talas with Billy Sheehan on bass..Now as I listen to this Wail cd..I was right..Wail had GREAT GREAT songs !!
WAIL shows us a good time - live!
author: krzaWith their blend of Big Star'ish songwriting and early Kiss like energy - WAIL sure know how to make the best of things! This i soulfull rockmusic that isn't afraid of experimenting during a fair amount of jamsessions and medleys (even a couple of the songs include intense fiddleplaying - how about that!)To prove that a good rockband is a really GREAT rockband - you should really hear them live...On this double disked WAIL album - you're in luck - cause the first disc is entirely LIVE ! The sound is maybe not of the top notch HI-FI kind..though it contributes with something else - AUTENCITY ! - You really feel a part of great concert here ...WAIL, maybe doesn't bring us the most original kind of rockmusic - but they sure show us the meaning of good songwriting and great playing. Thank god for CDBABY.com that brings this kind of music to the surface again !
Wow!! Those tunes really take me back.
author: Mike Braithwaite / Cathedral Stone Music PublishingIt's great to hear the vibe and sound of original tunes from the mid-70's. Some of the best music of all time was written and performed at that time, and it's nice to see the magic rubbed off on other bands such as Wail that I've never heard of until now. Great guitar tone and riffs!! Long live 70's rock.
