notes

Singer-songwriter Adlai Waxman writes authentic, exciting music which is deeply layered with emotional resonance. Adlai mixes old and new sounds by blending the textures of both acoustic and electric instruments such as the accordion, violin, upright bass, acoustic guitar, piano, and electric keyboards. It is a memorable unique sound that becomes infectious, repeatedly drawing you back.

A recent finalist in the Canadian Winter Lights song- writing contest, Adlai has taken his music across the United States and Canada. His musical adventures included a three- year transplant from Toronto to Vancouver where he performed in clubs and at festivals. While based out west he worked with Allan Rodger (Spirit of the West) to produce Adlai's self titled EP. Upon his arrival back to Toronto where the multi-instrumentalist is now based, Adlai received accolades, rave reviews, followers and gigs which spurred him to create a new collection of original songs the EP, Pomona Valley.

The CD Pomona Valley was recently featured across Canada and the United states (on the net) on Bandwidth/CBC Radio. In the first week of May the track "Nothing Left" from the EP was # 1 in the CBC NEW MUSIC SINGER-SONGWRITERS TOP TEN and currently holds at #7.

In Pomona Valley, the original melodies are wistfully sweet, while Waxman’s voice resembles an early Elton John.

Adlai Waxman’s CD, “Pamona Valley” is an astonishing release that reveals itself slowly to the astute listener. The lyrics possess a brutal honesty without any put-downs, force or negatitivity, a feat which few singer/songwriters attempt for fear of sounding too idealistic. At first the lyrics might sound cliché to some. The line “There was a girl” (in track 6-“Caledonia Street”-Waxman’s first masterpiece) could be argued, to have been said one too many times. In Waxman’s case what follows makes this line as noteworthy as the first time it was ever written (If any one knows when that was please let me know). The music is pure and stands as a beautiful and carefully structured backdrop for Waxman’s origianal, innocent and very memorable voice. The array of sonic colours gives each song a different flavour yet the album holds together brilliantly as a cohesive musical statement. The last time I had a musical experience such as I did with "Pamona Valley" was when I bought Billy Joel’s first album "Cold Spring Harbour". It took time to peel off the layers and after each consecutive listen I found more and more to discover and enjoy. After time, as with Pamona Valley, it became a staple in my CD library. “Pamona Valley” stands at the peak of the highest mountain and is definitely worth the time and money. For those looking to listen to and appreciate a genuine artist, Enjoy!

  • Amazing sound. Unique voice and skill

Adlai is true to his art. He refuses to sell out and keeps writing and playing music that is truly his own. His songs are from the heart and he plays with joy and purity. Adlai is destined for success. He is a musical genious just waiting to burst. Perhaps huge record sales will come in the future, if they do be certain that he will never change his sound. He is the real thing.
