notes
“This some of the most truthful/soulful music I think I’ve ever heard.”
Corey Herman
Adjectives from the same review include “dark, powerful, graceful, introspective, beautiful, expressive, honest and heartfelt.”
Where can you find music matching all of these descriptions?
The songs on the new album Tradition range from driving rockers like the title track and Lead Me On, to the sweet ballads of Come Home To Me and Left Behind to the intricate finger-picking of Good Night and Leota to the front porch stomps of Spoken Word and Tides. There is not a single sleeper on the whole album. Each song is crafted and shines and stands alone as an affirmative musical testament.
In the past year a growing audience has surfaced for the eclectic mix of rock-folk-blues-soul music of Wes Tucker and his newly formed band The Skillets in the Washington D.C. area. With intricate guitar work from Bryan Washam and the driving backbeats of David Rutkowski, the band continues to fill small DC venues with powerful demonstrations of musicianship and raw emotion. With the release of their first record “Tradition” the band is receiving great reviews and the audience continues to grow. With songs ranging from delicate harmony laced ballads like Left Behind to the head nodding-beat of the title track it is clear that these gentlemen thrive on diversity. They shift from honky-tonk stomps to Latin infused instrumentals, to soulful crooning and back again in the space of a setlist. Bryan Washam is a student of blues, jazz, and funk on guitar and also shares duties on the bass. Dave Rutkowski has been schooled in Latin and Afro-Cuban beats and easily handles the responsibilities of straight rocking as well. Wes attributes his song-writing and vocal styles to growing up in Southern full Gospel churches and being introduced to the music of Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix at a very young age and later discovering song-writers like Ben Harper and Ani DiFranco. If the influences sound scattered, what unites these musicians is a love of good music as well as good taste. They appreciate the opportunity to make music together and they listen to each other. This is apparent from the first notes you’ll hear at a show and rings clear on their debut release “Tradition.”

this music never met a cookie cutter
author: HalThis is fine CD. If you're hesitating, believe the reviews....buy it and enjoy. And Enjoy you Will. My perspective? Older than White Rice. Have loved many sorts of music for well over 50 years. Heard about this album from my terrific cousin Kathryn. Her dear friend.... and the future husband of her 14 kids(grin) ....Dave handles percussion and keyboards for the Skillets. In one dimension or another, just about every fine song I have ever heard has been informed and moved by the spiritual. Even Chantilly Lace by the Big Bopper.. Wes' album is rich in spirit. So much pop nowadays is preformed for lcd mass appeal to industry test markets. This distinctive music never met a cookie cutter....not folded spindled or mutilated. Other reviewers have spoken of Wes' distinctive vocal influnces and styles. True enough....I'd even swear I can hear just a tiny rhythmical trace of a very young Cat Stevens in there somewhere.....but of course finally his singing is very much his own...And it is memorable and excellent. Not always sure who creates which lick, but Bryan, Dave and Wes can really play. As others have said, these songs are all worth hearing many times...no wasted space. My personal favorites? The musical grooves the band hits in Tradition. Also the sweet meandering flow and tone of Leota...and the way it sets up the faster tempo of my favorite of the collection, Tides. A beautiful song...true in affection and generous in spirit... that should appeal to anyone who has lived long enough to have encountered a necessary but deeply fond farewell or two. Tradition could fairly earn 5 stars, but I wouldn't do that to any young artists. The best is always yet to come...

author: Chelsea Cochran - Left Off The DialThe first time I heard this album, I was immediately struck by an overwhelming sense of calm and familiarity. This is the power of Wes Tucker’s recent album, Tradition. Tucker is a clever musician specializing in the realm of Southern rock with a twist of gospel and a hint of the blues. Wes Tucker’s easy vocals and his comfortable acoustic melodies are thickly reminiscent of the likes of Ben Harper and even Dylan. Tucker’s song writing style is thoughtful and careful, bringing up themes of society and spiritualism. The openly intellectual lyrics are intertwined with melodies that draw upon moments of rock, gospel, and 70s funk. Considering the wide variety in the songwriting, it’s the addition of Tucker’s crooning voice that draws the album together. There are moments that will grab your attention and have your toes tapping, while at other times, the album will leave you relaxed and reflective. The combination of song styles jump around a lot throughout the album. Tracks like “Spoken Word” and “Lead Me On” are marked with quick drumlines and clipped guitar melodies that will hold your attention. These are intermixed with romantic ballads like “Remain” and “Come Home to Me.” These touching songs rely heavily on sweet acoustic riffs and thoughtful lyrics. From funk inspired foot-stompers to soulful ballads, Tucker’s songwriting style remains strong. He is certainly a talented musician and one that will appeal to the masses. It’s obvious that Tucker is a musician that we will be hearing more from over the years. Anyone who has a deep seeded love for the likes of Harper should check out Tradition. So, pull a chair out to your porch on a summer sunset, grab a cold porter, and relax to the music of Wes Tucker after a long day.
A true masterpiece of folk rock
author: Duss Rodgers - CatsAsk Music and EntertainmentLike being home and young again. Wes Tucker & the Skillets bring warmth and comfort to music. It reminds me of the cold winter nights as a child listening to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. A true masterpiece of folk rock. The guitar sings sweet melodies with riffs that have been placed so perfectly that you simply feel them dancing in you. I'd have to say it's been quite awhile since I've had the pleasure of listening to anything close to folk rock that I'd listen to on a regular, but I've found myself coming back for a listen or four since I first heard these tunes. With no flash, no flair and no hype Wes Tucker and co. have created a truly soulful piece of work. If you're a fan of real music, do yourself a favour and really check this out. The riffs are smooth and all instruments give the impression of being married. One. This is what song writing is all about. True musical art...period!
One of the most original, thoughtful Albums of late
author: Wil "SD Lover" M.I sit through a lot of cr@p from local artists, but Wes Tucker is the diamond in the rough that makes it all worthwile. Ingenious songwriting is coupled with the amazing guitar skills of Bryan Washam and it is all cemented with the rythm provided by Dave Rutkowski. I can't wait for the new album to come out, but Tradition will be the flagship. I'm not gay or nothing, but these guys melt my face.
GREAT album for any kind of mood
author: PaigeAll of the tracks on this album are great. My personal favorites are Left Behind (which I practically had on repeat for an entire week) and Come Home to Me but they are all good. No need to skip by songs on this cd! It's definitely a soulful album for any sort of mood.
"... outstanding songwriting ability ... a vibrant work of an original artist."
author: Music Monthly - Greg YostOver the last few years, a new style of music has been creating a splash nationally. This currently-unnamed genre is identified by its acoustic guitar-driven mix of folk, rock, blues and roots music and by the artists creating it. Jack Johnson, Mason Jennings, Ben Harper, Donovan Frankenreiter and G. Love and Special Sauce are some of the people at the forefront of this style and with the recent spike in popularity for tours and albums form these artists, it is clear that the American public likes what it hears. Wes Tucker is a local artist playing the same type of music and he is very impressive on his new album 'Tradition.' The 13 tracks on the album feature Tucker's outstanding songwriting ability, along with his guitar skill and voice. Tucker is backed on the album by Bryan Washam on lead guitar and vocals and Dave Rutkowski on keyboards and drums. The overall feel of the album is laid-back and mellow - music for a lazy summer day. Songs like "Out of my Hands" and "Remain" seem directly influenced by Jack Johnson's relaxed acoustic surf rock, while others like "It Wont Be Long," the title track and "Tides" incorporate the more rock-influenced sounds of artists like Ben Harper and Mason Jennings. But even though Tucker wears his influences on his sleeve, 'Tradition' is not a cheap imitation of the other artist, but rather it is a vibrant work of an original artist. Wes Tucker is definitely creating some music that is not prevalent in the area and that's what makes 'Tradition' both unique and enjoyable. - Greg Yost - MUSIC MONTHLY
An inspired and inspiring collection of songs
author: Jean BayouFrom the first song to the last, TRADITION keeps me coming back for another listen. It's got everything a listener could ask for--memorable melodic and lyrical hooks, honesty, inspiration, truth, beauty and some really great riffs (not to mention Wes Tucker's incredibly warm and soulful voice). I can't say enough good things about this CD....
Very nice..... very nice.....
author: Will WestI actually got this album about a month ago... after the first few listens I was like wow, what a nice album. Ater quite a few more listens the songs really began to sink in. Soulful, comfortable and very smooth...

The acoustic guitar on this record has one of the best tones I have heard on record. Then you see this was recorded at home. Not to geek out about sounds, but that gives you an idea of the attention to detail they have given this record. Much love went into this performance. Mellow, yet poignant… the songs speak of a world in which ideals can only stand when uplifted.
PUT THIS DISC ON AND LET IT PLAY !!! It will set you straight!
author: Hallie DesmontsWes Tucker's hip debut album Traditions has groove and introspection. You don't have to skip any songs as it is tight in it's entirety. Set to brilliant writing on universal themes, his unique sound strums your soul. It's smoothness tinged with excitement! And the dude can sing! Thankfully missing is the self-rightousness that many artists of depth can't escape. It's very hip but not overt. It's an interesting sound which can pump you up or simmer you down, depending on what you are seeking, and your mood. I run to it, rest to it, get my groove on with it, you know what i'm saying... Then I come back for some more. It's got all the hooks in the songs, but without the cheese. Redemption, song 4, is my fav, although i really have loved them all since i originally connected with Traditions. Check it out/// We have to give Tucker a reason to put out a follow-up album this hot!
Wes Tucker's Family History
author: AmberWes Tucker could easily be the love child of Ben Harper and Jack Johnson who was shown great love by his godmother, Ani DiFranco, shortly before being sent to the rural south to be raised by a gospel choir while his parents were on tour.
Thoughtful Songwriting with a Blues Rock Backbone
author: DaveA personal favorite of mine that is great for anything from roadtrips to house parties to laying on the beach. Wes' lyrics are poetic and thoughtful, backed by warm, bluesy guitar lines and commanding drumming. Don't miss tracks include the title track "Tradition", a bluesy rocker, and "Left Behind", a fluid song with a chorus you'll find yourself singing a long with.

I'm really diggin this cd. Their sound, in my opinion, is very soulful and organic. I specifically like "Spoken Word", "Out of my hands" and "Redeemed". The words are very inspiring. The cover and photography layout is really cool too. Overall it's a quality album that I'm looking forward to sharing with peeps.
GREAT ALBUM!
author: AudreyThis is an amazing album. It feels good, it makes you think, and it is just lovely. If you like the sound of Ben Harper, you will love this.
Great CD from the first track to the last!

Music to listen to as you focus on work or kick back and relax .
author: Joan FallicoPleasant listening music with a touch of the South. The crystal clear beat and rhythm create a calming mood. When listening to ths CD you soon realize these artists take their music and performance seriously.
Awesome CD, and these guys are hot!
author: KathrynDefinitely a CD worth buying and a band worth seeing live! This CD has a tight sound, kind of funk/soul/rock/mellow. Hard to explain but great to listen to -- you'll just have to check it out to understand what I mean. My favorite song is "Left Behind"; their voices harmonize together really well and the melody behind them is great. I recommend this CD to anyone who appreciates great songwriting and an awesome new sound.
You are going to LOVE this CD!!
author: FritziTradition is the perfect mixture of great songs and great musicians. The lyrics and melodies are thoughtful and well written, and you can hear the heart in the playing as well. Keep an eye on this guy!!
You should have this album.
author: Philip D'AmbrosioIt's hard to believe that "Tradition" was recorded in a basement in some little house somewhere, but if you listen to this cd it's definitely in keeping with the aesthetic of Wes's music: each in itself a little house where something big is happening. The players on this album do an able job of supporting the songs, and the lyrics and singing are great -- Wes manages to ask some questions you don't hear much on the radio these days, and maybe seems to have a few answers, too. If you can listen to the track "Redeemed" and not be moved, your heart is probably missing. Pick this album up.
Wes finds the perfect mix of roots and innovation!
author: Brad BargerWes and the gang have done it and are still currently doing it! Tradition is packed full of emotion. It will have you thinking, dancing, and smiling. This album is good for the soul. From the rhythm and the guitar licks, to Wes’ deep thoughts on life, love and religion, I enjoy this music because it’s a classic/new sound, it’s got an underground vibe, and these guys are good. Wes finds the perfect mix of roots and innovation!
Wonderful, ecclectic songwriting with meaningful messages.
author: RichListening to The Wes Tucker band's recent effort, Tradition, is akin to cruizing the serene 'waters' of life with a passing perspective of different, very meaningful 'islands'--each island representing a song with a message the listener can take, use and reflect upon. There are 12 of these jems on Tradition, with a beautiful instrumental, Leota. The first time I played the CD, I let it go from start to finish with no interruptions. Cohesive and wholesome, Tradition is a fine collection of art shared with us through Wes' songwriting talents, as well as guitarist Bryan's fingered melodies and drummer Dave's envigorating rhythms. All three have done a stellar job of self-recording, which is very impressive to say the least. I look forward to The Wes Tucker band's future musical endeavors.
