Indie Pop with teeth. Catchy rock songs with cockeyed lyrics about clothing, cars and redemption. An alarmingly good debut from this NYC quartet.

notes

Wormburner is a New York City-based indie rock band. This is their self-released debut, and here is what PopMatters.com had to say about it:

Remember when pointed storytelling was a component of quality songwriting? Steve "Hank" Henry does, as he leads his Wormburner mates through a solid five track EP, channeling the spirit of alt-country rock visionaries The Byrds and The Long Ryders. The tracks maintain an appealing balance: "Skinny Leather Tie" transports listeners back to the barren new wave wasteland without causing undue grief; "Muscle Car" lays down a catchy synth riff from which Henry's vocals hint at '80s popsters Big Country and The English Beat; the up-tempo fun of "The Sunday Song" and "A Hero's Welcome" will have everyone dancing in the aisles, while the closer "Turndaround" incorporates enough melancholy into the ballad format to stay comfortably within the realm of "thought provoking". The value of "Joy In Mudville" comes as much from the enjoyment it provides, as from the potential that Wormburner has to stajke a claim for itself in the very near future. Sharp lyrics and jangly guitars make this disc well worth the time, as it is grounded in what can be best descrbed as tastefulness and musical integrity.

  • Pop is not a four-letter word

I came across this band and CD quite by accident, and I'm so glad I did! If "Skinny Leather Tie" doesn't immediately suck you in, you're either too young to appreciate the skewering of cheesy '80s fashion or you have two left feet and at least one bum ear. Not all "pop" music is manufactured garbage, as this CD proves. This is pure pop-rock fun meant to be blared from your car speakers while whizzing much too fast down the highway. While SLT is the stand-out track, each song is a burst of feel-good pop. You'll bounce around like a flea on crack until the last song, "Turndaround". It's a little more on the mellow side and slightly reminiscent of mid-career REM. It's like the cool-down after a heart-pumping workout.

So I am at CB's one night to see my friends band and these guys come on and i am BLOWN AWAY...6 song set, but not just 6 ordinary songs...6 CLASSICS! I get on the mailing list and they hit me when this CD came out so i bought it...and was happy to find that the energy in the live set was canned and pickled and transferred right onto this first studio effort from this NYC foursome. Muscle Car in particular....what is that wonderful sound that meanders thru that song? Very good ep guys! thanks for the heads up....looking forward to any follow up. Regards, August
