notes

"I gestate the mutant race of Old Kingdoms. I bring them reincarnated souls from the Belly of the East, where the Beast was forbidden. Wisdom was hidden from his henchmen. I had to drench them in my waters that flow, so when their bodies came to the surface, they were food for the crow..."
~Excerpt from Three L's by Yejide The Night Queen

Yejide the Night Queen spits powerful, raw lyrics, sings melodic harmonies and smoothly changes her rhythms to articulate her sensual tenor-tone throughout NYC and beyond. Like royalty, she's charismatic and comfortable when expounding her timeless lyrics. Rough, rugged and refined, Yejide's verbal essence is skillfully manipulated to guarantee your listening pleasure without today's redundant samples or topics.

Yejide's community and charitable works have resulted in the "Womon Award 2000" from WERISE (Womyn Empowered through Revolutionary Ideas Supporting Enterprise) for contributing to 'the powerful movement of women artists and entrepreneurs'. She's received national love through the Black Track Newspaper, Shout NYC, Blu, RedEye and Mass Appeal magazines, college radio stations, independent documentaries and video plugs from Def Comedy Jam, MTV's The Grind, BAM's Dance Africa and Japan's Dance Field video series. She represented for Planet Brooklyn when she accompanied Breez Evahflowin & Poison Pen (her Stronghold fam) to Theatre Barbey in Bordeaux, France for the 4-day Hip Hop Concert & showcase, Per4mentalz.

Yejide (phonetically pronounced yeh-jih-day) has graced stages with her dancer, Serge and KRS-One, Pam Africa, the Roots, Rha Goddess, dead prez, Medusa, Mos Def, Jessica Care Moore, Abiodun (the Last Poets), Apani, Pharaoh's Daughter, Baba Israel, Kte Elevitch, InI Mighty Lock Down, The Anomalies Crew, Second 2 Last, Omega Moon, Professor Shuman, Mother Cheeba, Ngoma, Imani Uzuri, Regenerated Headpiece, Stahhr The Femcee, Tha Remainz, Afi, Yah Supreme, Flo Brown, Apollo Heights and countless others.

Her CD, "SEVENTH!" is still circulating throughout the world with production by DJ Evil D of Da BeatMinerz (Playstation/Rivers Run Deep), Scienz Of Life (Queen In Exile), & Mic One of Track Team Productions (Earth Tones/Use What You Got). This project was released to re-humanize the senses for the rebirth of Hip Hop...

RIVERS RUN DEEP pays homage to the spirit of wombmen and the depths of our inr-chi. EARTH TONES is a symbolic tune that invigorates individualism and a respect for the art of Hip Hop. PLAYSTATION is Yejide The Night Queen realigning into Storm The Mama Wize. QUEEN IN EXILE is a verbal illustration of historic value. USE WHAT YOU GOT tells a lot about the Night Queen... Relationships are a blessing in DREAMS OF SUNSHINE, a special take on Steel Pulse's 'Throne Of Gold'. SUMMERTIME is her rendition of the Porgy & Bess tune accompanied by Survival Soundz' with lead vocalist, Carla 'C#' Gomez on background vocals.

  • Worth the money just to listen once.

Hip-Hop is in much need of true artist like The Night Queen. Though Yejide sometimes lacks emotion in her delivery, her spoken word surely does more than administer a verbal onslaught of the mind. There is no doubt that She-Manifests within her Deep Rivers the ability to Run Hip-Hop. She should be mentioned amongst the names, and likes of: Jean Grae, Mos Def, and Bahamadia.

  • From Poland
    author: MC Gorzki

Yejide is very good! She's featured on a Polish Hip Hop compilation called, "Hip Hop Rasizm Stop #2!" It's a one-of-a-kind Hip Hop compilation that includes contributions from artists all around the world. As we all know the male domination in Hip Hop is present all around but this fact however does not exculde the womans presence in Hip Hop. The American female MC from New York - Yejide The Night Queen - is the living proof. Her track on the compilation offers us a great Hip Hop experience.

  • She should have called this, A Beautiful Mind. @---)-
    author: KEN

I had the honor of meeting Yejide after one of her performances, and the first thing that I said to her was #1, I gave her a complement of her show, then #2, I requested the Seventh CD. When speaking with her, I found that she was a beautiful person which reflects on her CD. My favorite song no doubt in Seventh would have to be Queen in Exhile. The song made me travel threw the motherland in the presence of a socially wise Queen, who is contious of the times we live in [truly]. We need more of this in the game of hip hop music. Because I know that Yejide has a tramendous upsid, I give Seventh a 4 out of 5.

  • An inspiration in rhythm.
    author: mukahayah Ltd.

A REAL Night Queen. A nocturnal creature, oblivious to her reign, a solo songbird, destination: Footlights. Armed with voice, lyrics, beats and tones. Worth a Kings ransom. Giving listening pleasure, while moving one's spirit to the maximum delight of her subjects.

  • author: Tamara D. Turner, CD Baby

A more political Zap Mama. The groovy twin of India Arie. The lost sister of Michael Franti. This is female fronted, socially conscious, sophisticated hip hop for the most discriminating of esoteric, urban music fans. If the names Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill perk your ears, don't waste a moment tuning in. Woven with trippy jazz and soul-ripplin' r&b, these highly infectious beats, highly stimulating lyrics bordering on spoken word poetry and highly electric grooves that tweak the mind as well as the body, combine for one stunning album. In other words, "Damn, girl!"
