notes
Practically a one-woman band, an energetic, edgy, multi-instrumentalist who has traveled the globe and picked up a vast mixture of musical influences: a touch of Ireland in her tin whistling; a little New Orleans in her piano playing; even hints of Latin America in many of her tunes. A troubadour, a Vaudevillian, a storyteller and an inspired performer.
ZOE LEWIS was born and brought up in the little fishing village of Rottingdean on the south coast of England.
She started playing piano at the age of 4,discovered JAZZ and moved to LONDON at the age of 18 and played in a variety of bands exploring all sorts of musical styles.
She was keyboard player in the LATIN-JAZZ-POP group AVANTI for 3 years, toured the country and also established residencies in many LONDON pubs playing and singing COLE PORTER and GERSHWIN tunes into the wee hours.
At 23 she started travelling the world picking up musical grooves wherever she landed. She picked up the guitar and started writing songs and had her first originals show to a packed house in SAN FRANCISCO in 1990.
Since then she has continued writing, performing and travelling around the globe. She has released 5 recordings and has made her home in PROVINCETOWN,CAPE COD,where she performs every summer to the tourists with her 4 piece band ZOE LEWIS AND HER RUBBER BAND.
The band play a hi-energy set on a bunch of weird and wonderful instruments.ZOE tickles the ivories but can also be heard on guitar, harmonica, ukulele, accordion, penny whistle and even kazoo!
KATE WOLF from Seattle performs on a one-string bass made of a steel pole for the neck and a cardboard body. she makes it sing!
SYLVIE RICHARD from Quebec City plays percussion and buckets and ROXANNE LAYTON,who also performs with MANHEIM STEAMROLLER,rocks the house with her jazz and latin solos played on and assortment of wooden recorders!
ZOE was recently voted audience favourite at the FALCONRIDGE FOLK FESTIVAL SINGER-SONGWRITER SHOWCASE and was a finalist at the ROCKY MOUNTAIN FOLKS FESTIVAL summer 2001.
She tours constantly and you can check out her website at www.provincetown.com/zoe Her latest recording FISHBONE,WISHBONE,FUNNYBONE is receiving rave reviews and features special guest performances by JULIE WOLF from the ANI DIFRANCO band and ERIKA LUCKETT.
She describes her music as WORLDBEAT-VAUDEVILLE.There's really nothing else very much like it around. It's a lot of fun. It'll make you want to tap your feet a little, maybe jump on a freight boat or camel and to notice the quirkier things in this world!

author: Debbie LesserI bought "Small is Tremendous first because it's newer. I loved it and knew I wouldn't love any of her other CD's as much but bought this one anyway. I was so wrong...Now I think THIS is my favorite. I love every song!! She has a fantastic voice. Her music tends to calm me after a hard day but also has a way of envigorating me too. I'd love to see her in person. Zoe...when are you coming to Atlanta!!??
Zoe is fantastic! Creative, uplifting and whimsical...
author: Little JoyceGot all of Zoe's CD's and been to a few of her concerts. Can't seem to get enough of her contagious music and zesty nature!
Superb songwriting, eclectic arrangements and much more
author: WaltCan a CD really have great songwriting with soul catching imagery, eclectic arrangements with masterful musicianship, a vocalist who can deliver a lyric with both humor and pathos, and a production footprint as focused and clear as a cloudless starlit night sky at the shore? Yes. Fishbone,Wishbone,Funnybone
Awesome CD!!
author: NikiThis CD is so incredible; I recommend it to people all the time, and buy it as a gift to give to people as often as I can!!
Unusual, quirky, true
author: DorisI happened to hear her live in a small bar in Provincetown and was smitten with the performance. I had to have all her CDs. She holds true with every CD. That is very fine music.
Wow!! This is great
author: D2E2This Zoe Lewis is really an awesome musician with great energy and imagination. Love her song writing!!!
Feel Good Music
author: TootsIt was serendipitous when I stumbled upon this CD and what a wonderful discovery. This music just flat out makes me feel good.
Charming, Upbeat, LOVE IT!
author: Kristen at CD BabyThis is SUCH a fantastic CD. If you can wear a CD out by playing it too much...I'm on the verge! The lyrics are so vivid and the timeless sound of Zoe's pure voice, transports me to a charming place and leaves a SMILE. I had the privilege of seeing her play solo at Folk Alliance '04. It was her, a guitar, the occassional appearance of a ukulele and a whole host of other sound making instruments (like the can that made a SHEEP noise!) ~~~~ Buy 3! 1 for you NOW, 1 for when you wear the first out and 1 for the friend who will want to steal yours!

Ooooohh... I LOVE her voice! Great quirky little jazz album. A bit of Squirrel Nut Zippers, others like Janet Klein. Oh so CUTE!
AMAZING!
author: TiffurstI love this CD. I got it for Christmas, and, like another reviewer, first heard Zoe Lewis on the late night radio show live from Chicago. I was so taken by her talent, it was a must have! I too love jazz, and this ...well shucks folks, I'm speechless. Love it!
This CD is out of sight. What a talent!!
author: Jerry SpainI love this CD. The song Jacques Cousteau is very catchy and will have you dancing a jig and so will squid. This is great stuff!!!
Intelligent, amusing and terrific musicianship
author: Gary in CanadaMy wife and I attended the Ottawa Folk festival last summer and although the level of all the musicians was superb, Zoe Lewis stood out as a real entertainer. Her sense of humour and zest for life was infectious. We tried to buy her CD at the festival but she had already sold out. All of the songs on fishbone wishbone funnybone are well written, are played very well and take us right back to that wonderful weekend. Thank you Zoe and her other fabulous musician friends and thanks CD Baby for carrying quality music.
real gem!!!!!!!!
author: rajkoi really didn't plan to write review, but noticed the comment of previous reviewer (Caitlin) how he hates most music and this sounded good to him. i listen mostly to classical, jazz and ethno music, and quite a few finds that defy genre descriptions. well, no matter how exclusivist this sounds, i don't know anyone who is harder to please with good music, but this music got my attention from the first note. i heard it tonight on midnight special, direct live broadcast from concert in chicago. her music is so filled with innocence, wit, incredible tunes, very playful, contagious, yet not "cheap." she's got a true talent, and i'm surprised that she is not better known. her music compares somewhat to my surprise when i first heard madeleine peyroux first sing, another superb singer who is hardly known. for other suggestions of undiscovered pearls, try romane, paris combo, akiko yano. if by any chance Caitlin is reading this review i would appreciate if you can contact me in case you have some other "pearls" to suggest. always looking for new good stuff. :) my e-mail is treemed67@aol.com
incredibly varied and interesting music
author: Caitlinthis music is very cool. all of the songs on "fishbone, wishbone, funnybone" are quirky, fun tunes that are genuinely interesting. on "write me a letter," which begins with an accordion and some sensitive bongos, she ends up rapping, but it's completely seamless. i hate most music--i am known to spend days on cdbaby and other related sites just to find one new artist that meets my standards, but i was lucky with zoe lewis--she was one of the first that i looked at today. not only do i like her, but i'm impressed, which doesn't happen often! get this cd and all her others! i sound pretentious, but i've heard a lot of music in my 18 years...i know it's not long, but i try to educate myself in the world of music. at least check this album out...
