Chrisitan Bourdon drums, Andre N'Kouga bass and guitar adventurer Jean-Paul Bourelly make up the latest version of 3 Kings.
Bourelly, the Chicago native, who is well know for his ability to adapt, blend and transform familiar sounds, takes you into another "other" sonic space. On this outing he tackles a hybrid of high life that bends into a jazzy "convergence" sound. The trio is comprised of Andre N'Kouga playing 10 string bass, drummer Christian Bourdon and Bourelly who leads the group into melodic counterpoint on "Strutter" as drums and bass hold down an elevated tight backing groove. The track then opens up into a type of over driven, energy vortex. Through all its transformational, hybrid tendencies, this recording still has a healthy dose of flagrantly west African vibes, as the pieces strut and pulsate like a Cameroonian dance band. This tug of war between danceable passages and rock jazz excursions is what creates the tensions and give this recording dimension.
For collectors of Bourelly's adventures, its a more than worth while collection to have.
