ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
WHEN I SAW THE EXIT SIGN ON I-24 "NASHVILLE NEXT 3 EXITS" THE BUTTERFLIES , ALREADY IN MY STOMACH, BECAME JET PLANES. WE WERE ALMOST THERE. I WAS GOING TO MEET THE LEGENDS OF COUNTRY MUSIC- HANK WILLIAMS DRIFTING COWBOYS. I DON'T KNOW IF I WAS NERVOUS OR JUST PLAIN SCARED. WHEN WE PULLED INTO THE SHONEY'S PARKING LOT ON " MUSIC ROW" I WANTED TO CANCEL EVERY THING AND HEAD BACK TO SW FLORIDA. I WAS SCARED. IMAGINE THE DRIFTING COWBOYS HERE TO MEET ME. IT SEEMED LIKE MILES ACCROSS THE SHONEY'S PARKING LOT (IT WAS ONLY 75-80 FEET). SOMEONE OPENED THE DOOR AND I SAW A TABLE FOR EIGHT RIGHT OUT IN THE GENERAL DINING AREA, WITH FOUR GENTLEMEN SEATED. AT THE TABLE I WAS INTRODUCED TO RAY EDENTON-THE MASTERMIND, KENNY MALONE-GREAT PIANO PLAYER, DJ FONTANA- DRUMMER AND ONE OF MY IDOLS AND LATER TO BE ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS- JERRY RIVERS. DURING THE INTRODUCTIONS A MAN IN A HURRY ENTERED SAYING "SORRY I'M LATE-I'M DON HELMS-ARE YOU BOBBY YATES? WE WERE TO MEET HILLOUS BUTTRUM LATER AT THE STUDIO AND BOB McNETT WAS DRIVING DOWN FROM PENNSYLVANIA-STATUS UNKNOWN. WHILE EATING , A MAN I THOUGHT WAS AFTER AUTOGRAPHS APPROACHED OUR TABLE, EXTENDED HIS HAND AND SAID "SORRY I'M LATE- I'M CHARLEY McCOY. JERRY RIVERS BEFRIENDED ME AND TALKED ABOUT HIS AND DON'S EXPERIENCES WITH HANK. THE JET PLANES IN MY STOMACH HAD UNKNOWINGLY LANDED. RAY EDENTON SAID "SHALL WE ALL MEET AT THE STUDIO?

WE WERE JUST A SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE STUDIO AND IN LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES WE STOPPED AT A SHABBY UNPAINTED BUILDING AND EVERYBODY ENTERED THEREIN. I WASN'T SURE IF THIS WAS THE KIND OF STUDIO I WANTED TO WORK IN. BUT ONCE INSIDE THE SCENE CHANGED TO A BEAUTIFUL WESTERN STYLE SETUP COMPLETE WITH HITCHING POSTS AND COWBOY ITEMS. THERE WAS ALSO A GALLEY FOR OBSERVERS CONTAINING ABOUT THIRTY SEATS. WE WERE ONLY THERE A FEW MINUTES WHEN HILLOUS BUTTRUM ARRIVED AND A FEW MINUTES LATER, BOB McNETT SHOWED UP. THE BAND WAS COMPLETE AND I WAS PREPARED TO WORK WITH MY IDOLS, THE HANK WILLIAMS DRIFTING COWBOYS BAND.

IT WAS AMAZING HOW QUICKLY THESE MUSICIANS COMPREHENDED THE MESSAGES I WAS TRYING TO CONVEY IN THE MUSIC AND THEY PUT EXTRA EMPHASIS WHERE I INTENDED THEM TO BE. THE ONLY EXCEPTION WAS WHEN THEY TRIED TO CREATE THE MUSIC FOR THE UGLY SONG. WE COULDN'T GET MUCH MORE THAN ONE VERSE DONE ON THE UGLY SONG WHEN JERRY OR DON OR HILLOUS LAUGHED SO HARD THEY HAD TO STOP. JERRY ASKED ME HOW I CAME UP WITH SUCH A SONG AND DON REPLIED " BOBBY KNEW ONE OF MY EX GIRLFRIENDS" . BUT, WE FINALLY GOT THROUGH THE UGLY SONG AND FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS ON AND OFF, I WORKED WITH AND SOCIALIZED WITH THE DRIFTING COWBOYS. AS WE ALL KNOW THEY ARE ALL DECEASED NOW AND I MISS THEM VERY MUCH. IN A WAY THESE SONGS THAT I WROTE WITH THE DRIFTING COWBOYS BACKING ME UP ARE TO SOME DEGREE A TRIBUTE TO A BUNCH OF GREAT MUSICIANS.

Memories
I was in the studio when this album was recorded. Mr. Yates was a long time family friend and my father, Ronnie Whisenant did some of the back-up singing. I will always love this album!!!!
