ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Danielle Eva is an american jazz vocalist and songwriter whose distinctive soulful and breezy style is keeping her in the international spotlight. Fusing jazz harmony, echoes of appalachia and lilting latin rhythms with the palettes of folk and pop she serenades in shades of blue-eyed soul with a compelling sincerity and a side of sass.

She has performed in the top venues of New York, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Istanbul and Bodrum, Turkey. Danielle is a past top three winner in both the Billie Holiday Competition and US JazzMobile Vocal Competition, and was selected for the prestigious Monk Institute’s Jazz Aspen. She is currently spending time performing and traveling around Asia and Turkey, performing with various musicians and continuing songwriting. Her debut cd "Road and Moon" showcases her original compositions and arrangements alongside gems from the jazz and folk songbook.

********

With her debut album, Road and Moon (2010 Devour Music), Danielle Eva has gathered songs that capture the moments of reflection between yielding to the heart’s road ahead while looking back on the one already traveled. Her experience of this state of wandering is evidenced by the fact that each of the album's original songs were recorded in three very different cities of Washington DC, Hong Kong and Istanbul.

"I Sing in Blue" is an original bossa-jazz composition inspired by the sights and romance of  "fancy dancers" in their colorful regalia at native american pow wows. "Convenient Distraction",  Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" and the jazz standards "Detour Ahead", "Where is Love" and "Softly As in A Morning Sunrise/Little Sunflower" speak to the moments in between finding or losing one's direction in life and love.

The back-porch country swing feel of Laura Nyro's "And When I Die" and the blending of a traditional mountain ballad "He's Gone Away" with "Willow Weep For Me" are in homage to her family's appalachian roots. "Blackberry Winter" is a lesser known song by jazz composer Alec Wilder and here it is given an austere treatment with voice and bass alone. The album's title comes from a lyric of "Kiss", an original song by pianist David Budway (MaxJazz).  With this collection of songs and the stories they bear, Danielle aims to connect with fellow wanderers in their moments of the in-between and to do, as her song states, "Begin Again".
