ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
The Ganda Boys was formed during 2008 through an exciting collaboration on the highly acclaimed 2009 BBC-TV drama series, MOSES JONES. (breaking news: music soundtrack just nominated for BAFTA Award for Best Original Score for the composer). The core triumvirate Denis Muggaga, Craig Pruess and Daniel Sewagudde immediately found that they had a special sound and style together – and that they could write lots of songs as a team (so easily!) and the result was immediate, soulful, amazing and rewarding. Bringing an international and professional feel to all the recordings, they finished their first album, “The War of Love”, within six months, and the final CD is remarkable – a milestone in vibrant African fusion music.

Although the origins of much of the Ganda Boys music are Ugandan, the album has a “Africa unity” feeling to it, with a high level of live band production and rich recorded sound. There is an element of film music to it, too, where the soul of the songs touches one with the poignant stories from Africa, including songs of separation and struggle.

Denis and Dan, formerly of well-known Ugandan group, DaTwinz, combine their dynamic and soulful vocals with Craig’s big sound vision. Craig, an American living many years in the UK, is an international BAFTA nominated film and TV composer, gold and platinum record producer and arranger, besides being a multi-instrumentalist, sound designer and world fusion expert. The Ganda Boys have a new and arresting, contagious energy to it, where the songs take on a life of their own, touching the listener directly to the heart.

The Ganda Boys immediately started the Ganda Foundation, a charitable organisation for bringing First World awareness to poverty and suffering in the Third World. Music is such an effective way to inform, galvanise and inspire people! www.gandafoundation.com

The Ganda Boys in concert is something not to be missed! Here are some audience comments:

“The Ganda Boys need to be seen live, they are brilliant performers with incredible energy and presence. The ultimate feel good experience.”

- Cameron Roach, International EMMY Award winner 2008 (for being the TV producer on hit UK TV series “Life on Mars”), BBC-TV producer and film freelance producer
***********
‘”It was a fantastic evening, with loads of energy, atmosphere and good humour! The band were tight, rhythmic and enthusiastic – and the Ganda Boys themselves were exhilarating and completely wild! I loved it!”

- Liz Lenten – MD and founder, Scarlet Records (in the audience!)
***********
“The Almeida theatre was packed with an audience bubbling away at the anticipation of this exciting new band on the scene. The GANDA BOYS hit the stage with such energy that the audience were bouncing off their seats to the music, seduced by the sixteen musicians. The timing was tight with each beat. The syncopated rhythm, the melody, the Ganda Boys’ voices rung through your body and soul.

Songs such as “Homesickness” and “I Know Who You Are” were a fusion of jazz, percussion and brass sounds – but the main voices of the Ugandan boys (formly Da Twinz) were heard through stories and occurrences within the UK community and Uganda. The sound was a unique collaboration between record producer and film composer, Craig Pruess, and Ugandan singers extraordinaire – Denis Muggaga and Danny Sewagudde. The raspy voice of Denis and and the soul voice of tongue-twisted Danny combined for a high energy performance – jumping from the audience to the band and dancing while singing. It was like Fela Kuti mixed with Miriam and Amadou with a mixture of funk, pop/soul/rock, Afrobeat and classy percussion. An electric performance with humble lyrics… I left the theatre highly charged and ready to go buy the album….. to carry on dancing at home!”

- Sarah Mursal, BBC-TV art director and indie film researcher and art consultant
***************
“The performance capabilities of the two front men, Dennis and Dan raise the material from the CD to another plane. They have clearly worked together a lot in Africa and bring to the UK, to the world, a partnership that is unique, exciting and uplifting. This brings an African sensibility to stage craft that I have never seen before, so vibrant and engaging. The band that Craig has put together brings to life the essence of the music on the CD but also allows a lot of freedom for Dennis and Dan to express in their own way. This reveals the professionalism and heart that Craig brings to the project. Put all this together - Dennis, Dan & Craig - very ably assisted by the great musicians in the band, and you have an experience that people will be clamouring for. Look out world, here they come, the Ganda Boys!”

- Russell Stone, chart songwriter (Randy Crawford, R & J Stone), session singer (Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Tony Bennett), lead singer with experimental world chant and groove group, At-Ma.

Ganda Boys-the war of love is beyond awesome! It captures the spirit of our times and is timeless. The Ganda Boys have taken off where Osibisa left us in the 70's. I couldn't take it off my player. I danced and sang to it. It rocks and jives, caresses and weaves us through 12 beautifully crafted tracks. Thanks Dan, Craig and Denis-you've taken me back to the muse. The goddess lives with the Ganda Boys!
