Slopey

by Hugh Doolan

Melodic, catchy songs combining the lyrical edge of a rural Lou Reed and the melodic combustion of Paul Simon or Paolo Nutini, SLOPEY showcases the beautiful heart-worn, “folk-soul” voice and songs of one of Ireland's prime singer songwriters

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
From Jason who contributed greatly to Slopey: "We approached this recording as a set piece and make an album's worth of material that sounded homogenous. Hugh has many influences & talents but my approach to making music is much more standard, so I wanted to rein him in a little. A song might last for 5 or 6 minutes so we edited these track times down and got some really nice structure around them. I'm listed as co-writer, but my job was more to do with arranging. I was so pleased my friend Rob Corbet, percussionist, was able to help us out. He, like Hugh, is an instinctive musician. I got the chance to play drums, bass & lead guitar on one or two tracks, which was sheer indulgence and enormous fun. It was a rare treat to get to rehearse and ultimately record these songs with Hugh; he is one of the few musicians I've played with who has an innate musical talent. When he's in full flow, it's a pleasure to hear his creativity & the sounds he makes. He's also one of the best harmonica players I've ever heard. I'm proud of 'Slopey' - low budget recording but high quality material."
Personnel:
Rob Corbett: Drums, Bongos
Colette O'Leary: Accordion
Sinead Buckley: Backing Vocals
Jason Ellis: Bass, Backing Vocals, Drums (track 3), Electric Guitar, Whistle
Hugh Doolan: Acoustic Guitar, Harmonica, Vocals

Wonderful Folk/Rock Music

His voice is soulful and embeds a sense of heartfelt sincerity. Sit back and relax to the free and easy flowing song, “Heartlands,” that also feature some well balanced harmonies. “Cupidz Tune” is a catchy song with strong and solid guitar riffs and a charming melody. You’ll like the lively and bouncy beat of, “See Africa,” with lyrics that are melodic and fun.
