Virgin Road

by Hugh Doolan

A truly beautiful song. Counterflow rhythms and strong melody lines from the viola, guitars and mandolin with seriously mature lyrics on young shoulders, sung with unbridled passion - probably the most important song Hugh has ever written!

Album Notes
Another song recorded in Tunnel studios Dublin ( 1994) under the watchful eye of superbly talented Paul Brennan. Paul needed a demo to impress Clannad so he could engineer their upcoming project. I needed a demo - but what I got far exceeded that kind of classification. A song with interwoven layers that can be explored/revisited over and over. Expertly executed guitar by Fergus Byrne, heftily assured double bass by Willie Comerford, nice measure of jangle to Barry Mcintyre's mandolin; I can't remember the Viola players name - oh bother - but he did a great job ( if you find this: 'you did a great job') in making an otherwise folky song sound classical. We made the most of the intermittent 5/4 (I think) timing. A song that stands the ultimate test of time. Hear for yourself.
