Listening to singer-songwriter Jane Lui’s music is like watching a Michel Gondry film. Her instrumentation and vocalization have a whimsical, homemade feel that is inventive, magical, masterful and intimate. Jane integrates left and right brain to produce her own videos with piano, guitar, xylophone and harmonium, not to mention Ikea wine glasses, handmade music boxes and fireplace brushes against walls. “Learned from being poor in college -- didn’t have stuff, so you make it up."
Goodnight Company, Jane’s third album set for digital release October 5, 2010 and on CD, January, 2011 builds on her previous successes with debut Teargirl and 2008 San Diego Awards Best Recording Nominated follow-up, Barkentine. “Goodnight Company has the most production value. Using PledgeMusic.com, Lui raised over $11,600 in two months to fund the album. “I couldn't believe how much people wanted to help and it’s made the project more real now that I’m responsible to my fans."

Jane’s silvery, husky voice slips comfortably into R&B, Pop, Country, Folk and Jazz. Critics liken her to Joni Mitchell, Fiona Apple, and Rufus Wainwright. She has opened for Jason Mraz, Vienna Teng, Jay Nash, Jim Bianco, Kate Earl and Tom Brousseau, was showcased at CMJ 2010, toured to Australia, Canada, UK, and has over 1 Million views on Youtube.

Quirky, Enchanting
Lui’s breathy, vulnerable soprano and well-honed command of melody aren’t the kind of thing that one usually thinks of as challenging, but she challenges because she is the kind of musician who never seems to sit still. She’s always moving in the opposite direction from your musical expectations. But listeners willing to abandon their expectations entirely and just follow her lead will be rewarded.

You can get a handle on her mix of eccentric R&B and folk pop fairly quickly on the first and title track “Goodnight Company.” But, once you do, she throws in a Dixieland jazz interlude at the end just to make sure you are paying attention.

The album is a bit like the soundtrack for a half-improvised one-woman show, staged in a barn on a balmy summer evening with the full moon for a spotlight and a sequencer for an orchestra. That is to say, it’s strangely enchanting and oddly hard to forget.

Musical theater is a strong and fertile influence here, but so are country music and jazz. The troubled relationship post mortem “Illusionist Boy” is a genuine back-porch ballad, but it is followed by the equally poignant but decidedly more indoorsy piano torch song “Southern Winds.”

You never quite know what’s coming next, but the abrupt shifts in genre do even out as the album goes on, finally mellowing into the minimal and completely acoustic “Last Rose of Summer.” It’s a perfect and perfectly haunting tune to end on, and a big part of why you may well want to go back to the beginning of Goodnight Company and listen to that first quirky-yet-carefully-crafted track right away.

Timeless
Capturing the feeling of Jane's third studio album in a single review proves to be a challenge in itself. A few words which come to mind include, "toasty", "timeless", and "tempting". Lui explores different genres with each track, leaving the listener begging for more of her creative approach by the end of "Last Rose of Summer". This refreshing new CD features tracks which whisk me away into thin air (Illusionist Boy) and sit me back down with its sheer, raw magnitude.(Perished) I was particularly hesitant for Jane to change her direction from the sultry, smoky lady I was introduced to in Teargirl and Barkentine, to a lighter, sunnier attitude. I found that Jane's music from previous albums was so genuine, it evoked a spectrum of emotions difficult to pinpoint and that's what made them so magical. However, Lui has grown as an artist, as Goodnight Company proves time and time again that sad, sultry tunes aren't necessarily the only catalyst to explore such feelings.
