Quiet settings of hymns, original compositions, and beloved classic themes; intended to provide a peaceful ambience in the home. This is music that is to be felt as much as to be heard. It is characterized by slow tempos, fluid phrases, meditative moods, subtle arrangements, and ethereal sound sources.
The music on this CD displays an aura of expansive sonic space. It is designed to function both for passive listening (as a peaceful aural background; some listeners even use this type of music to aid relaxation and sleep) and for active listening (where the tone colors, melodic contours, harmonic flow, and textual connections can be deeply explored).
This musical collection is a groundbreaking combination of the musical style called “ambient music” with the melodic and spiritual qualities of hymns, sacred classic pieces, and original meditative compositions. The nature of ambient music is to use evocative sounds, slowly evolving musical thoughts, and rich sonic textures, not attempting to imitate acoustical instruments but exploring the broad tonal resources of digital sonic design. Sound sources include MIDI-controlled hardware modules and sophisticated atmospheric “soft synth” plug-ins. Using computer sequencing, the composer/ arranger is also the performer and recording engineer.
Marden Pond has created music on two CDs, both in general distribution, that feature this style: Environments (Music Enterprises, 1996) and Footnotes (Music Enterprises, 1996). This composer/performer has also created numerous commissioned works, including film scores, orchestral/choral pieces, theatrical dance scores, chamber music, jazz, commercial music, electronic suites, and music in other diverse styles. His music is featured in the Emmy award-winning film, "The Shadow of Light," and is found on over twenty other CDs from Covenant Media, Music Enterprises, and other labels.
