ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Mariachi Champaña Nevin
Jeff Nevin, Ph.D., Artistic Director

Mariachi Champaña Nevin has made a name for itself as a virtuoso ensemble of uncompromising quality that embodies the ideals of Mexican and European classical music. Led by accomplished classical and mariachi trumpeter, composer, professor and author Jeff Nevin, they have delighted diverse audiences across the US, Mexico, and as far away as Russia for more than a decade.

The secret of Mariachi Champaña Nevin is their union of world-class mariachi musicians with the finest classical string players, trumpet players and vocalists to create a “symphonic mariachi” like no other. They boast current or former members of mariachis Vargas de Tecalitlán, Sol de México and Los Camperos, the San Diego Symphony, Pacific Symphony, Orquesta de Baja California, Orquesta Fihormónica de la Cuidad de México and many other ensembles. Jeff Nevin has had numerous occasions (solo or with his ensemble) to accompany many of Mexico’s finest singers, including Placido Domingo, Fernando de la Mora, Aida Cuevas, Jorge Lopez-Yañez, Mónica Ábrego, José Luis Duval, Florencia Tinoco and José Medina.

Leading the current ascension of mariachi music, Jeff Nevin has created a large body of original music scored for mariachi and symphony orchestra, including the world’s first Concerto for Mariachi and Orchestra (“Pasión Mexicana”), the world’s first classical song cycle for mariachi and orchestra (“Al aire libre”, based on the poetry of Alberto Blanco), a magical Mexican Christmas celebration (“La fiesta de la nochebuena”), and numerous arrangements of traditional mariachi songs. Together with Mariachi Champaña Névin, and occasionally alone as soloist/conductor, Jeff Nevin has performed his music with the symphonies of San Diego, Colorado, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Pasadena, San Bernardino, Baja California, East Texas, Santa Rosa, Idaho Falls, La Jolla, Key West, the San Diego Chamber Orchestra and the American Philharmonic in Sonoma County.

Mariachi Champaña Nevin recently released their fifth CD recording, “Nuestra Navidad”, a ground-breaking double CD set featuring beloved Mexican and American Christmas carols along with classical favorites including Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and Pachelbel’s Canon.
