ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
A living legend, Pandit Arvind Mulgaonkar is classed among the most renowned contemporary Tabla Maestros. He has piously preserved the traditional elegance of Tabla repertoire. Born in 1937, Pandit Mulgaonkar has not only devoted his life to learning, mastering and preserving this treasure of rare Tabla compositions but has also handed it down most generously to the next generation.

Pandit Arvind Mulgaonkar began his initial training in Tabla under Late Ustad Babalal Islampurkar. Then he became a disciple of Ustad Amir Hussain Khan (Doyen of Farrukhabad Gharana) and took advanced training for 14 years till Khansaheb’s death. Later he trained under Ustad Ahmedjan Thirakhawa (3 years) and Ustad Ata Hussain Khan of Rampur (3 years).

In this CD, Pandit Mulgaonkar demonstrates traditional tabla compositions, mainly Gats or fixed compositions. He describes the type of the Gat, defines it, recites and then plays it.

Wonderful
This CD is a wonderful resource on Traditional Tabla compositions. A.Mulogankar has established himself as a foremost expert of Lucknow and Faroukabad styles as well as very Rare Punjab compositions. The compositions are very well explained and A.Mulogankar has a knack for outlining the special portions of the composition in plain detail (i.e what makes a specific composition special). All in all, this is a wonderful resource for advanced tabla students. I highly recommend it.

A must-have for any serious tabla student
This is a one of a kind resource. The compositions are recited and played at a speed where it is possible to understand, appreciate and learn what is being played - the explanations and commentary is excellent and to the point. The material covered is extensive - chalan, rav, rela and of-course some of the most exquisite gats of the Farukkhabad tradition. It is a labour of love, and it shows. If you are a serious student of tabla who eschews gimmicks and want to add some authentic traditional compositions to your repertoire, this is for you.
