Album Notes
Observant of influences as varied as Neil Young, Can, J.S. Bach and ambient electronica, “Ocean by Surprise” is the debut solo album from multi-instrumentalist Dylan Thomas Walter (The Process of Elimination). This set of eight dynamic and eclectic art-pop inventions was recorded amidst the nights and weekends of 2010’s first half. Kaleidoscopic rays of pianos and synthesizers glimmer through the cracks in mosaics of banjo, mandolin and acoustic guitar beneath introspective, sometimes cerebral lyrics. As a whole, this album is intimate yet expansive. The emphasis here is placed just as much on texture and atmosphere as on melody and rhythm. The handcrafted process through which the music was produced, completely removed from business interests, results in a modern pop curiosity that is fiercely individualistic and refreshingly rough around the edges.
