This collection includes mainly Neo-Baroque compositions inspired by Latin church texts and featuring a dense polyphony and modal or moderately modern harmony: 'Halleluiah' (motet in G major, 1994), 'Te Deum' in G major (1997), 'Ave Maria' (a cappella motet in F major, 2000), "Leva Jerusalem oculos tuos' ('Jerusalem, raise thine eyes', a cappella motet in B minor, 2000), 'Victimae Paschali laudes' ('Lauds to the Easter victim', a cappella motet in B minor, 2000), 'Magnificat' in F major, 2003).
The two masses are non-dogmatic, universally aiming efforts, following the form of the Catholic mass but combined with peculiar themes and techniques. Missa humilis in D major (2003) is a contemplative, restrained, a cappella work, superimposing various Romanian Orthodox liturgical tunes in a resulting fabric of soft aggregate chords, while Missa solemnis in B major ('oratorium liturgicum omnibus generationibus', 'liturgical oratorio for all nations', 2005) is an ambitious work, at times majestic, fiery developed and thoughtful.
The only secular composition in the set, the cantata 'La Pesta' ('The Plague', 2004), was inspired by verses from Petrarca's 'Canzoniere' and 'Song for the Great Plague', yet it has a spiritual sense of ascension from worldly, dramatic tribulations to a higher and more luminous aspiration. The other cantata, 'Ein' feste Burg' ('A Mighty Fortress', 2011), developing the famous Lutheran chorale by Martin Luther, is more like a tribute exercise in Handel's style, with allusions at several of his great choral works.
