ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Afro Blue is an award-winning vocal jazz ensemble that has often been described as a "Vocal Big Band." They sing music in styles similar to Take 6; Manhattan Transfer; Lambert, Hendricks and Ross and New York Voices; but have their own unique sound. The group has been in existence for 12 years and is based at Howard University. As students graduate, new students come in to the ensemble, so there is a steady flow of talent. All members of Afro Blue are majoring in Jazz Voice, so they study solo jazz singing, improvisation, jazz history, jazz theory, jazz arranging and jazz piano - as well as traditional western european music. In the span of 12 years, Afro Blue has won 10 Downbeat Student Music Awards, some for small vocal jazz group and some for large vocal jazz ensemble. In addition, they have members of the ensemble who have won Downbeat SMA's for solo singing and arranging. Afro Blue has also won 7 "Wammies" (highest award given by the Washington DC Area Musicians Association) - 3 for best A Cappella group; best video (nature boy); Album of the Year (the previous album - The Best Is Yet to Come), Best Choral Album (also The Best Is Yet to Come); and The Spotlight Award - giving to musicians who bring national attention to Washington music. Afro Blue has performed at many of the major venues in the US including The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Opera House, Concert Hall, Eisenhower Theatre, Terrace Theatre, Millennium Stage and Jazz Club); The Howard Theatre, The Warner Theatre, The Lincoln Theatre, and The history Apollo Theatre in Harlem, NY. They have performed with The National Symphony Orchestra Pops under the direction of the great Marvin Hamlisch and recently with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra for the premier of a composition written by Geri Allen, titled "Stone and Streams." In 2011 Afro Blue appeared on the third season of NBC's "The Sing-Off" and placed 4th. That particular combination of students stayed together after the show and formed their own ensemble, but all were members of Afro Blue, under the direction of Connaitre Miller while on the show. This new Album - Jubilee - includes a wide variety of styles from straight ahead jazz, to pop, to spirituals - all with the signature "Afro Blue" sound. Please - check us out. You won't be disappointed.
