ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Akhtar Shoukat was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. He graduated from Ansari High School, and then joined the Polytechnical University of Kabul. In 1987, he moved to India, and in 1990 he immigrated to Canada. He currently resides in the Toronto area. He started learning music with Professor Robeen Chaterji while he was in Kabul for 2 years, prior to moving to India to continue the study of Indian Classical Music. He completed the two-year Indian Classical Music Diploma Program within the Faculty of Fine Arts at the University of Delhi.

He is considered one of the best known ghazal singers from Afghanistan today. He is not only an accomplished ghazal singer, but an exceptional and seasoned composer as well. His unique compositional pieces featuring a fusion of Farsi ghazals with the aura of Indian classical ragas, has brought a new taste and style to the Farsi ghazal scene in Afghanistan.

Majlesi - Collection of Farsi Ghazals
Akhtar Shoukat is not only an accomplished Ghazal singer, but also a seasoned composer, as is exemplified in this Majlesi Album. His compositional style is deeply rooted on the principles of Indian Ragas, but his liberal approach and comprehensive outlook coupled with vocal mastery brings a whole new horizon to the sight of the listener. Upon careful observation, what seemed unorthodox at first, would in fact bring about more melodiousness and taste in the structure of the overall composition. He has certainly broken the Ghazal stereotypes in Afghanistan.
All the tracks in this Album have been composed by himself and sung in appropriate Farsi (Persian) lyrics. Although there isn’t a shortage of singers when it comes to Ghazal singing in Afghanistan and the adjoining countries, what distinguishes Akhtar Shoukat’s music apart from others, is his masterpiece compositional ability, aptness in matching the mood of the compositions to appropriate lyrics and surgical precision in the overall rendition of a piece of music. I am sure oftentimes anyone could have come across a piece of music, in which the listener felt the composer could have exerted little more efforts in polishing the composition, or the lyrics used do not appropriately depict the mood of the composition, or the singer could have done a better job in further enhancing his performance. Well I am sure most listeners would agree after listening, that wouldn’t be the case with Akhtar Shoukat’s music in this Album. The observance of all those little intricacies goes a long way in making an Album a masterpiece and timeless.
As a close friend and someone who had had the privilege to take part in some of the guitar tracks in his previous Albums, I highly recommend the Album ‘Majlesi’ to those audience who are after exquisite music and meticulous in their choice.
