I wrote this song about hunger in the USA as I thought of one in seven children in our nation going to bed hungry. Food rescue (dumpster diving) is one legal solution to the problem. Most grocery stores compact their waste so there is no access to it. But about 10% of the stores throw their hundreds to thousands of dollars of fresh bread, vegetables, fruit, entrees, dairy products, and floral products in large bins behind the stores that are unlocked. I discussed hunger in America with Alice Tatum, who loves to aid charities and good causes, and she was willing to sing this fun, informative song about a serious problem.
Alice Tatum is a bright soul who brings zest and deep passion to this song, not to mention all the fun blues nuances and a two to three octave vocal range that knocks your socks off! I get a smile on my face and true listening pleasure every time I listen to her sing Dumpster Divin' Blues! ~ Kelly Athena
Lyrics and Music by Kelly Athena of Phoenix, Arizona
Well, the farmers plant it, tend it while it grows
The pickers pick it, back-breaking row by row
The truckers haul it, fifteen hundred miles
so you can have fifty-five thousand things in your aisles
Oh why do we waste so much food? Please tell me
Whoa, I've got the dumpster divin' blues, yeah
Well, I drove to the grocery store, walked through the front door,
asked the boss if he could donate food for the poor.
He said, 'I donate my food, you know I'll get sued
so there's no way in hell--my only goal is to sell!
Liability, lawsuits, it makes me act so fearfully, yes it does
but I can't let people eat for free--that's not our corporate policy!'
Oh why do we waste half of our food?
Whoa, I've got the dumpster divin' blues
So I sneaked around back where they don't keep track,
found bins stacked to the sky with pizza, potatoes, and pumpkin pie
I threw it in my car--my back seat looked like a salad bar
No, I'm not ashamed--there is no disgrace
The real question is: Why do they throw it away in the first place?
I want to know
Oh why do they waste mountains of food? owww
Whoa, I've got those dumpster divin' blues
Last night I had a dream we all had plenty to eat
I saw cherry pie and ice cream flowin' down the street
Kindness had replaced politics and greed
With hunger erased, we all embraced
We all were one having fun! hooo, yes we were
Well, I've got the dumpster divin' blues
I've got the food rescue blues
I've got the compassion-for-hungry-people blues
I've got the hate-the-waste blues
I've got the starvin' people blues
Oh, I've got the bee-bad-dirty-low-down, dumpster divin' blues
