Since ages sound and rhythm have been vital elements of human expression. Meditative pursuits in all cultures and religions have been practiced by reciting continuous melodic phrases. The state of transcendance is attained when the mind is totally focused to the sound of these phrases. The submission to sound and rhythm elates and transports our energy to a plane where the body and mind fuses.
Alaap: is a slow and contemplative part of the raga. With Alaap, the artist introduces the raga. The charecteristic melodic phrases which expresses the mood and emotion of the raga are elaborated in a very slow tempo. In the sitar the gentle curves and flow of the gliding notes and the soothing effects of the micro-tones produced by the 'meends' (lateral deflection of the strings) creates peaceful effects. The 'Jor' is the rhythmic part of the 'Alaap'. the 'Jor Jhala' is the finale with fast rhythm.
Alif Laila is an artist who has chosen the siatr as her medum of expression, exploring through the Indian classical music. Her training and strong influence of the Senia Maihar Gharana (school of music) has nourished her fascination and deep connection with the Dhrupad Stlye (a style ofmusic which has a very slow raga development) 'Alaap' . The gradual unfolding of the raga with Alaap is specially appealing, meaningful and fulfilling to Alif.

The Raga Hemant literally means Fal/ Autumn. It portrays the sadness of parting with elegance. Pathos and joy are bound together with a subtle beauty.
