ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
WELCOME TO THE MUSIC OF ALL SOULS! All Souls Church, Unitarian, has been a beacon for progressive religion in Washington, DC for over 180 years. Our mission is to create a multi-cultural, spirit-filled and justice-seeking community that bears witness to a love that beckons all souls-not some-to the Welcome Table. Joyful music is central to this mission, and to our life together at All Souls. The rhythms and melodies contained on this CD come from the many cultures that make up our diverse congregation.

THE ALL SOULS CHOIR was founded as one of the first multiracial choirs in Washington, DC. Today the choir celebrates a half century of musical excellence, singing a repertoire as diverse as the membership of All Souls Church. The artistic versatility of the singers allows the ensemble to perform everything from ancient church chant to Fauré to spirituals to South African songs, jazz and gospel.

THE RIEGER ORGAN at All Souls has been widely acclaimed for its innovative combination of classic mechanical-action German design and electronic computerized stop action - the first of its kind ever built. Four keyboards and pedalboard command 60 registers, 96 ranks and 5137 pipes (Rieger Orgelbau, Schwarzach, Voralberg, Austria, 1969). Its sound quality is both unique and beautiful, as is its towering presence above the rear choir loft of the historic All Souls sanctuary, with the graceful and intimate positif division suspended behind the console. Of particular interest are the 16'/4' Spanish Trumpets - unlike any chamades found on American pipe organs.

Thrilling to hear!
I am listening to your MUSIC FROM ALL SOULS CD and am thrilled to hear such wonderful music-making. It is truly a gorgeous recording and full of things I want to do at North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield, IL (Chicago) where I am music director. Such a wide variety of music and all beautifully sung and played!

Music for the Soul
All Souls Choir sings from the heart. I am reminded of Howard Thurman's comments on Deep River, sung by the Howard University Choir.
Most of All Souls songs are sung with a slow passion, a meditation. I gave a copy to the Czech Unitarians, who are pleased the first verse of MOTHER SPIRIT is in Czech.

As close as I can get to being there
Nothing can compare to hearing All Souls choir singing in person at Sunday services. But this cd comes close. Beautiful sound, beautiful music, and beautiful voices. Thank you to all involved in making this cd happen.

Inspiring and uplifting
I received this as a gift from my minister when I was the choir director at a UU church in NJ. What an inspiration it has been! I played it often for my high school choir students, and they were so moved they learned Total Praise (a great struggle, but totally worth it!). I'm especially impressed with Wade in duh Wadduh and Oh Freedom. The percussionist is fabulous and really adds a lot. Great work!

Music from All Souls
A quite lovely album. I hope to someday hear this choir in person.

NEXT BEST THING TO BEING THERE!
I am a member of All Souls who has moved out of the DC area. I am now a part of a VERY small UU congregation (about 20 members) in rural Tennessee. I have been saying to the UUs here.. You've GOT to hear All Souls's Choir! NOW THEY CAN!!! HORRAY!!! I MISS ROB AND ALL MY FRIENDS THERE!!! YoUUrs, Jenn :)

Good, but no substitute for seeing/hearing them in person!
I enjoyed it and will play it many times, but it has some weaknesses. The organ (a very powerful one) is so loud that it gets distorted on the CD. The song, Spirit of Life was dragged out. I have been to All Souls' and know that to actually see & hear this group is a special thrill.

Glorious Music from the Heart
From start to finish, the CD stirs the soul. My very favorite is "Total Praise", the most stirring song on the CD. I've played it over and over and get goose bumps every time. I especially like the second ending which is a surprise "encore". Interestingly, I saw a clip on tv that showed a choir in NYC singing this hymn at Peter Jennings' funeral. One of my other favorite songs is the organ rendition of "LeFreak". I wasn't sure I wanted to buy the CD, but my friend convinced me that I would love it. I do and I'm glad I bought it.

Wonderful and uplifting
Music from All Souls is no substitute for the spirit of this choir's live performance, but it is a wonderful collection that gives the listener a real flavor of this unique ensemble. John Strang's creative use of the Reiger organ is a particular highlight of this CD.

A sonic revelation
A remarkable recording. The realism is startling. It is difficult to discern if the singers are in my living room or I am in the Universal National Memorial Church in Washington, D.C.
