Amma McKen, one of the most sought after apons (leader singers) of Yoruba/Lucumi music in the US, has been singing songs in praise of the Orisa’s for over 3o years. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. Amma has sung for numerous Bembes and religious ceremonies in and outside the United States, as well as colleges and universities conducting lecture demonstrations and performances.
On this project Amma is accompanied by a group of experienced musicians/singers and features members of the group of which she is the co-founder Omiyesa. The musical director is esteemed Cuban artist and accomplished bata drummer Orlando “Puntilla†Rios.
The title is derived from the Yoruba language of southwestern Nigeria which means, “The Owner of Songs is Eloquentâ€. This project is a compilation of eight songs derived from the Yoruba cultural tradition and religion known as Lucumi in Cuba and the United States. The songs include the bata orchestra, drum and shekere as well as an accappella selection in the style Arada people. The traditional call and response style of the songs and the masterful drumming and percussion will encourage all listeners to sing along and dance and will inspire and encourage all practitioners in their worship of Oludamare (God).
