Pastor André P. Jefferson, Sr. has been a playing saxophone for 36 years and is the proud pastor of the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Hampton, VA. He was had a lifelong passion for music and expressing himself on the saxophone.
He began his training like many youngsters do in the public schools bands of Chesapeake, VA and because of his love for music he majored in Instrumental music education at Norfolk State University receiving a B.S. degree in 1989. During this time he played in many of the ensembles and particularly enjoyed playing in the NSU Symphonic Wind Ensemble as principal Alto saxophonist and alto and tenor saxophonist in the jazz band. He studied saxophone with Mr. James Hester and NSU professor emeritus Mr. Emery L. (Chief) Fears and jazz saxophone with a Hampton Roads saxophone icon Eddie Williams. He was given his first paid musical experiences by NSU professor Mr. Rodgers Brown. After graduating From NSU Andre later felt a call to preach in the African Methodist Episcopal Church went to VA Union University to study ministry and received a Masters of Divinity in 1993. He has pastored various A.M.E. Church for almost twenty-one years and currently the pastor of Bethel A.M.E. Church in Hampton, VA. For eight years he spent time as a band director,
His saxophone playing style can be characterized as soulful, powerful and heartfelt. He is best known for his interpretation of the great hymns of the church. On Sunday mornings the sanctuary rings with the intensely expressive sounds coming from his saxophone.
His first album “Hymns in the Key of Glory” was produced at the insistence of many persons who have enjoyed his playing through the years and wanted to have his music shared with a larger audience. Some of the hymns of this album are played with a traditional gospel feel and many are played with contemporary styling.
The arrangements of the hymns, playing of the piano and keyboard and the recording of the rhythm section was done by Mr. Erik Jackson of Fine Arts Studio of Baltimore, MD. The recording of the Saxophone, additional mixing and mastering was done by recording industry wiz Rob Ulsh of mastersound music in Virginia Beach VA.
