It might seem that growing up and living in Utah, so far outside the electronic dance music scene (in more ways than one), would present hefty obstacles for producer M31 (Kyle Tippetts). But he’s been involved in the scene since 1997, back then as a listener, and now as a producer.
“Music is and always has been an obsession for me, in a good way. I discovered early in my life that it has such power to influence and to change lives. And I’ve always felt like I really wanted to share with others what has affected me so deeply.” To that end M31 has just completed his first concept album called The Mighty Have Fallen, crafting a singular musical experience from EDM-influenced beats and soundscapes, rooted within traditional rock and classical song structures.
“I wouldn’t necessarily think of most EDM albums as ‘concept’ albums. But I’ve always been drawn to approach a record in that way; I have a story to tell, and each track tells a different part of that story.”
In the case of The Mighty Have Fallen, he says, the story is taken from a book called The Book of Mormon, and the tracks paint a sonic picture of the civilization in the book as they evolve through what has been called the “cycle of pride,” from humility to pride to misery and finally war and destruction.
