A Fine Album of Solo Jazz Piano
For those who enjoy the solo jazz piano excursions of such master pianists as Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Fred Hersch and Roland Hanna, Melbourne jazz pianist Andy Vance’s newest recording “Just As I Am” will be a happy addition to your listening repertoire. Solo piano presents particular challenges to all jazz pianists. In early jazz the piano was often a stand-alone solo instrument, but many pianists since have given greater attention to playing in a group setting and less to the craft of solo piano which demands a different sharing of the musical load between the hands and carrying the full harmonic and rhythmic responsibility. Only a select few have distinctive solo styles and the necessary variety and stamina that can sustain solo performance. It is not easy to maintain the flow of ideas and the level of intensity, and the solo performer is left totally exposed, but can express greater freedoms with tempo and form than in group formats, and enjoy greater intimacy with the listener. Andy Vance has for many years explored and been inspired to create great jazz from the Christian hymn and song repertoire, recorded as a trio, quartet or quintet. He has now risen to the challenge and demands of solo piano, adapting some well-known hymn tunes and some fine new originals into his customarily thoughtful musical transformations. Each of Vance’s fourteen tracks is distinguished by a well-crafted introduction, its own tempo and rhythmic pulse and improvised solo work that selects from his broad jazz piano techniques. Those familiar with the hymn tunes will note the at times startling changes he makes to the harmonies and mood – for instance in ‘Joyful, Joyful’ - but will follow the familiar story that each tells. Those less familiar will appreciate his approach to the tunes as they would a standard jazz tune - the thoughtful improvisations, beautiful harmonies and melodies. There are many highlights – from the fine originals – the great melodies of ‘I love the way you love me’, ‘We praise the Lord’ and For God so Loved the World’ and the extended 'Galilee’– and the gentle rendering of the title track ‘Just As I Am’ , the lush ‘I Surrender All’ and the bolder re-interpretations of ‘And Can It Be’ and ‘O for a Thousand Tongues’. Vance continues to breathe new life and joy into this vast but underexplored repertoire and there is much for the listener to continue to enjoy and draw inspiration.
