Joe Ross

Remarkably powerful, tastefully diverse, impressively virtuosic
Andy Young is a very talented Illinois musician who plays hammered dulcimer, Irish flute, whistle and guitar. In fact, it’s surprising at how much captivating sound he can get out of an instrument like his Dusty Strings D-25 hammered dulcimer, a model which is not fully chromatic. For example, listen to the traditional musette “Java Manouche” that appears at track two to observe how Young and Gypsy jazz guitarist Alfonso Ponticelli showcase the dulcimer’s Gypsy heritage. “Annie-Zette” and “La Roulotte” are similar aural treats on this album. Young’s tastes are also quite eclectic, and he masterfully presents traditional Irish and Quebecois selection. Reels, a slip-jig, musette, and various other tunes make for a well-wrought and flavorful album of flowing lyrical fluidness. The superior instrumentalist Andy Young also keeps excellent company with the likes of guitarists Ponticelli (Swing Gitan) and Mike O’Regan, All-Ireland champion concertina player John Williams (Solas), pianist/fiddler Jonathan Whitall, and Irish step dancer Erin Scott-Haines. For an independent album release, I found Young’s CD to be remarkably powerful, tastefully diverse, and impressively virtuosic. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, Or.)
