ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
First published in 1742, the work was commissioned by Count Hermann Carl von Keyserlingk, Russian ambassador to the Polish court of Dresden, a patron of Bach and of a young brilliant harpsichordist named Johann Gottlieb Goldberg. As the story goes, the count suffered from insomnia and asked Bach to write him some pieces to while away the hours of his sleeplessness. Goldberg would have been about 11 years old when these variations were written and must have been a staggeringly fine harpsichord player. (He lived to be only 29 years old.) Along with Beethovben's Diabelli Variations, the Goldberg's represent the greatest keyboard variations ever written.
