ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Anthony Newman: Complete Music for Violin
Anthony Newman, composer

The opening sonata features a "jazzy" opening movement, followed by a solemn and (I hope) noble second movement. The third movement is fugal, both motoric and brilliant.
Performers:
Yoon Kwon, violin
Anthony Newman, piano

The Four Tarot characters are very contrasting. The opening Jester is a variation on a blues piece called "Frankie and Johnny." The second movement is a somber harmonic study using the background harmonies of Bach's prelude in G minor from The Well Tempered Clavier, Book II. The Chariot is a terse but brilliant toccata, while the Wheel of Fortune is a wild fugue with "crazy" stretti.
Performer:
Rene Jolles, violin

The three movement work Sinfonia, Variations, and Toccata may be played by violin alone or with added cello and/or percussion. The opening is a "'baroque" sinfonia, with added Stravinsky modernisms. The Variations are "Berg-like" but with a real tonal background. The Toccata starts with a "catchy" tune which returns many times, even though the movement is not a fugue.
Performer:
Yoon Kwon, violin

Probably my most often heard chamber work, Trio, the opening movement is a big scale introduction plus sonata texture. It is toccata-like with a quiet middle tune that reminds me of a Gregorian chant. The second movement is a set of variations on the original piano materials. Hold on to your seats for the fugal finale! Only five minutes long, it has more notes per minute than any other movement of mine.
Performers:
Renee Jolles, violin
Christina Cooper, cello
Anthony Newman, piano
