'Your Eyes' is the 2010 Downbeat award winner for the undergraduate college vocal jazz division. Besides premiering the Michele Weir arrangement of the title track 'Your Eyes,' the album also pays tribute to the Grammy nominated group Rare Silk, featuring four of their songs and arrangements.
'On A Clear Day' is a fresh and swinging New York Voices arrangement, transcribed from their 2007 CD 'A Day Like This.'
This rendition of the well known standard 'Lush Life' was originally recorded by Rare Silk and can be found on their album 'New Weave' (along with 'You Know It's Wrong' and 'Joy'). American River College Vocal Jazz Ensemble's recording features a piano solo by the nationally recognized Joe Gilman, book-ended by lush a capella sections.
'Your Eyes' is a beautifully mellow latin tune that uses more contemporary jazz harmony, with a sultry feature solo by Jacob Haws.
'You Know It's Wrong' is a feisty up-tempo bluesy song with a big band style shout chorus.
'Four Brothers' is a vocal rendition of a fast bebop tune recorded by Woody Herman's big band in the 1940s featuring 4 brothers' (or, 2 brothers and 2 sisters!) vocalese solos. This version has been performed worldwide by The Manhattan Transfer.
'Joy' completes the album with the same lighthearted, waltzing feel in which it began.
