You are holding my fifth solo CD in your hands. The theme is traditional music of Finland’s Swedish speaking areas. The Swedish emigrants started to settle on the mainland as early as in the middle ages. Homogenous Swedish speaking areas in Finland are Nyland (Southern Finland) and Åboland (South-West Finland), which were more open to the new influences, and Österbotten (Eastern part of Bothnia gulf i.e. Ostrobothnia) where old traditions are preserved up to the present day. Åland (the islands between Finland and Sweden) is the fourth area which has been an important route for the Finnish culture since the twelfth century.
For me the most interesting point has been the menuet as a dance and music in a traditional use. There have been many local variations of the performances. For example in dances in Lappfjärd and Tjöck two menuets were played before the polska, while in the other areas, there was only one. Also the tempos were different in each area. In some of the tracks on this album, I have been faithful to the original performance. Tunes I have learned from manuscripts can have a more open approach to the interpretation.
There are hundreds of great tunes in the archives, therefore it's impossible to put all the interesting material onto one CD. This album is mainly an introduction, since many forgotten fiddlers and manuscripts are still hiding in the archives. With this collection I want to share the unique heritage of Finland’s Swedish speaking parts. Surely there are many people outside these areas who haven't heard this wonderful music.
Wish you a joyful journey on the coast!
