ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
With sparkling production by Roland van Steijn at his "Art of Sound" studio in Holland, this album really stands out as one of the greatest of the genre because of its beauty, intimacy and almost prophetic poetry, and plaintive, deeply emotive melodies. Some of the tracks are genuine classics, like the tender "Silently spinning" and the inspirational native American song "The river is flowing". These are at once personal love songs but also universal messages, with an element of shamanic imagery in the lyrics. The phrase that best describes the overall atmosphere... as so often with Asher's music... is 'other-worldly'. Asher forged his initial reputation as a new-age instrumentalist, but is now better known as a mystical singer-songwriter, slightly reminiscent of Peter Gabriel in some respects. But the combination of Asher's pure vocals, innocent, melancholy melodies and startling imagery render him quite unique in the genre... a complete one-off! This is the passage quoted on the back of the CD artwork, from the track "Sweet dreams of the ancient ways"... almost Dylan-esque in its visual intensity:

My song has wings, to fly below
The vampire moon, the body blow
The naked truth, the master's whip
The unknown cargo upon your ship...

If Asher had a previous life it may well have been as William Blake!

Serpent in Paradise
SERPENT IN PARADISE

My wife and I find your voice very relaxing and with a positive vibe. Really enjoyed the lyrics of the "Serpent" CD, and thought that the production and sound quality was very good. I am a fan of prog, folk rock etc. usual suspects... Fairport, Strawbs, early King Crimson, Renaissance.
~ Howard, UK (2010)

I am blown away. This album is one of the finest I have listened to in years. The stand out track for me is 'If you believed in love', just a beautiful song so perfectly crafted with the formation of the words, syllables and rhymes. 'Time of spiritual emergency' is probably the easiest song for most listeners to empathise and agree with, and your versions of the native American Indian 'Morning sun' and 'The river is flowing' are magical.
~ Mark Franklin, UK (2008)

Your ability to paint these lovescapes has got richer in textures of honesty within the heartlands of one's mind. Thank you so much for sharing these songs, they still have the embroidery of spiritual thread woven through most of them. Others have the spirit of the travelling story-teller sitting round the night fire. It's been a wee tonic for me, Asher.
~ James Mangan, Scotland (2009)

I cannot get enough from 'If you believed in love'... this words you have used are so true, and in some nights when I can't sleep I hear this song sometimes over one hour... it gives me so much intensity.
~ Christl Gramer, Austria (2008)

I really must say how much I'm enjoying Asher's new CD! 'Ancient grief' and 'Sweet dreams of the ancient ways' are so far my favourite tracks.
~ Adrienne, MySpace (2008)

Hi Asha, "Serpent in Paradise" has arrived. My English is not good enough to express your angelic music and style. It came on the day Croatia lost the football match to Turkey, and I calmed down myself listening to 'If you believed in love'!
~ Mladen Santric, Zagreb, Croatia (2008)

I love your 'Silently spinning'. Great composition!!
~ Mihaela Solcan, Bucharest, Romania (2008)

Congratulations on "Serpent in Paradise". It has to be the best album yet.
~ Simon Lovelock, New Age musician, UK (2008)

Your rendition of 'Morning sun' is truly exquisite, indeed the whole album is infused with great beauty, heart and spirit.
