ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Throughout history musicians, artists, and poets have found great inspiration in nature. Whether it is the vibrant greens of spring, lush floral bouquets in the summer, a gorgeous array of changing leaves in the fall, or the brilliant white snow of winter--the seasons offer a feast of colors that stir the senses and invigorate the creative spirit. This CD includes songs for every season--from the singing of birds in the spring through the jubilant songs of Christmas!

Gifted as both a composer and an organist, Dr. Charles Callahan lives in Vermont and travels the world as an educator and performer. In his Alleluia, Callahan draws upon exciting and unexpected harmonies to create this exuberant piece crafted from a single word!

Gustav Holst is an English composer most famous for his orchestral work The Planets. England, during the time of Edward VII, held a fascination for the exotic culture of India. Holst used texts from Indian Sanskrit literature for his Two Eastern Pictures – Spring and Summer (composed in 1912). They paint an exotic picture of flowers, the moon, and love.

Daniel Hall’s setting of Emily Dickinson’s poignant poem, Indian Summer, weaves a haunting melody in the oboe with the voices and piano as an appeal for time to stand still to allow for one more glorious day of summer.

The choral music of Sandra Milliken, a renowned Australian choral composer and conductor, is appreciated for its innovative harmonic and rhythmic vitality. The breadth of her compositional style which ranges from lyrical and flowing to rhythmic and vivacious can be heard in her pieces on this CD.

Randol Alan Bass is an internationally-acclaimed composer whose works have been performed by the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra and the Tanglewood Chorus, and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. Bella Voce is delighted to premier these new versions of his Gloria and Christmas Flourish for women’s voices with brass quintet, organ, and percussion.

The women of Bella Voce wish you glorious songs in every season!

Dawn Willis, Artistic Director and Founder
