ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Beltaine is proud to announce the release of their third CD, a Christmas CD called Winter Wind. The CD is a collection of Christmas music from around the world. The tunes are bright and happy, a perfect way to celebrate this special holiday season.

There are 17 instrumental tracks that take you on a journey through the history of Christmas through music, starting in the 13th century with March of the Three Kings to more contemporary tunes like Up on the Housetop and The Little Drummer Boy.

The members of Beltaine had a great time recording the album. “It was strange to be playing Christmas tunes in July, but it was wonderful to be able to take familiar tunes and add our unique interpretation. We were able to experiment and add harmonies and even our own variations to these tunes.”

Beltaine’s music is traditional folk music from America, England, Scotland, Ireland, Finland, and many other countries. Their arrangements try to blend the instruments together to make cheerful, energetic sounds that float through the air and embrace the heart and soul of the listeners.

Beltaine performs thoughout the Northwest at many festivals and events. This holiday season, they will be celebrating the music of the season at The Pittock Mansion, the Grotto Festivasl of Lights, The Portland FolkMusic Third Friday Concert Series, Music Millennium, as well as many private parties. Not Just Another "Celtic theme Christmas" disc

Not Just Another "Celtic theme Christmas" disc
Their latest album is Winter Wind and it is not just another "Celtic Theme Christmas" disc of which there are many. The CD contains 17 instrumentals relating the history of Christmas music from the 13th century to now with very few of the usual seasonal songs found on so many other holiday recordings.

A sprightly version of "I Saw Three Ships" opens the record and it keeps moving well from there. After a puzzlingly short version of "The Holy and the Ivy" as the second track, a fine assortment of tunes and thoughtful performances by the trio picks up full steam after that. A highlight of the disc is "The Dancing Bear", not a holiday tune per se, but a glorious musical romp nonetheless. The playing on the disc is together and articulate.

The gorgeous cover painting is by another notable Northwest dulciemr player, Eileen George.

A Beautiful Journey through the History of Christmas music
Winter Wind is a beautiful journey through the history of Christmas music spanning the globe from the 13th century to the present. The bright and festive sounds of the acoustic guitar, hammered and mountain dulcimer, marimbula, flute, and penny whistle combine in folk inspired arrangements, with dance-like qualities and a celebratory air throughout.

Brian Baker’s guitar work shines with gorgeous solos in “What Child is This,” The Wassail Song,” and Baloo Lammy.” The sweet, clear dulcimers and the dulcet tones of the flute and penny whistle offer an gentle touch to these winter songs.

The care that went into the execution and arrangement of the music is also apparent in the packaging, with a lovely tranquil painting by Eileen George gracing the cover, and through liner notes sharing a brief history of each song. The repertoire is mostly familiar songs of the season, with a few that are less well known, such as “Up on the Housetop,” a 19th century American tune, and “There Comes a Galley, Laden” from 14th century Germany.

The delightful musical surprises that leap out of well-worn songs help keep this CD from adding to the glut of overplayed mall music. The touch of a major mode in “What Child is This” adds a distinctly Renaissance lift to the end of the tune. “Jingle Bells” springs out of the traditional Scottish song “Mari’s Wedding” with upbeat syncopated rhythms.

Brian Baker, Kris Chase, and John Keys, the talented musicians that are Beltaine, hail from Portland, and perform in concerts and at festivals throughout the Northwest. Winter Wind, their third CD, is a wonderful way to add brightness and warmth to the Holiday Season.

A Real Holiday Treat!
The season is Advent is an ancient celebration that prepares us for the coming of the Christ Child. I have already began to make the wreath from greens collected in the neighbors yard. We picked out four blue candles that reflect the beautiful blue night sky. Advent connects us to those of the faithful who have come before us and a reminder that others will follow after. Ritual is essential duirng this time of the year.

Winter Wind" is a wonderful addition to the season of waiting and watching. The music reminds us that we are not the first to marvel at the change of the seasons and the gifts that each season brings. The hammer dulcimer, not a modern instrument, is steeped in ancient tradition. Listening to the dulcimer playing of Kirs Chase and John Keys reminds me of sipping a fine wine in front of the fireplace on Mount Hood. The dulcimer playing would be a fine listen but the lilting addition of Brian Baker's guitar adds depth to many of the pieces. Like following an old family recipe the musicians combine their talents and fold them together for a wonderful holiday treat for all.

Here is my recommendation to you this holiday season. Bring in the greens, build a fire, light a candle and settle in for a true holiday treat. Music to help you watch and wait for the advent of God.

Great Selection of Songs for the Holiday
I listened to Winter Wind twice yesterday, driving back and forth to school with no distractions. You have just a first rate project here. I love the little melodic and rhythmic twists you put in and its a great selection of songs.
