ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Over the last two years this band has logged a ton of miles driving to gigs in Detroit, Chicago, New York, Boston and quite a few places in between. This recording is the musical outcome of all those gigs! Although my name is on the cover it’s really been a cooperative effort in composing material and getting arrangements together for the band. The title track “Your Soul” was composed with “Body and Soul” in mind, but with an up-tempo pace and slightly different chord changes. Duncan McMillan wrote “Napoleon’s Last Stand”. Duncan is such a great composer and frequently utilizes varying stylistic elements like contrasting time signatures and vivid harmonic colors when he puts together a tune. Listen to the way he artfully combines the funky A section with the swinging melody in the bridge. I composed “Riverside Ride” for Riverside Park in Manhattan, a great place to chill out from the chaotic city. “Blues For Now” is actually a song I recorded on my first album as a leader “Sweetie Pie” (PKO records, 2006). I wanted to give it a fresh rendering with the B-3 and besides; you have to include the blues! In composing “Another Try” I thought about the kind of chord changes I would like to improvise over and what it would physically feel like when improvising and moving my fingers over the horn while playing through the harmony. I let my intuition lead me. “West Grand” is by David Brophy and is just the type of thing for an organ group. Dave’s tune is soulful and straight to the point. This song has such a beautiful melody! For good measure we added a few standards in the mix; “Only Trust Your Heart” is a composition by the late Benny Carter and Sammy Cahn. “How Deep is the Ocean” is of course by Irving Berlin and here we added a little kick in the intro and outro for fun. The ballad “All the Way” was chosen for the group and arranged by Randy Napoleon. Randy’s presence added handfuls of swing, lots of solo heat, ensemble texture and harmony that really helped the music on this recording take off. Thank you Randy! I know you’ll love his solo on “All the Way”. The closing selection, “Lookout!” is a fun groover with a set of easy changes and the melody played with sax and guitar. We’ve played this at every gig and usually it’s the last tune of the night. It feels good to leave the audience feeling energized and upbeat!
