powerful accomplishment
BRB has always delivered thought provoking craftsmanship of song but this album is an artistic breakthrough! 10 tracks that are all gems.Although I appreciate the historical interpretation of this album .. it was the ability as a listener to lose myself in the creation of one's own narrative that makes this album such a crowning achievement. I constantly found myself lost in the lyrics and melody. I went through cycles of hearing this beautifully presented historical narrative to relating it something entirely different. It is the ability for a listener to make a song their "own" ..This is what makes a great song!!! That is a lost art among most songwriters. This artist can sing about crossing the street and make me reflect on life.
Rather than chasing mainstream success and compromising their vision like so many countless others.. this band stays true to form. One can hear that the number one priority for this band is crafting thoughtful songs. Lyrics with sense of purpose that do not chase the mindless hook or chorus. Sonically the album is an artistic step forward from the previous album. More layers and improved producing...A direction I implore the artist to pursue with vigor. Artists such as Wilco and Bruce Springsteen seem to have lost this earnestness and authenticity to the song experience that BRB still has and proudly presents to the world.

A Masterpiece
The Black River band's most ambitious project yet. After listening to the entire album I was amazed how much the music stayed with me. Powerful lyrics and a engrossing story packaged into one makes this a multiple listening experience. A haunting symphonic folk opera, dare i say, chronicling the events before and after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. . Told from a different perspective of people affected by this dark moment in American History. From Lincoln's prophetic "I Had a Dream" to the somber "In To The Woods" we as the listeners are treated to a wide range of emotions of voices in this story. There is the optimism of "Ride with Mary" with a slight hint of impending doom. The pathos of "Falling", "My Daddy's Dead" and "The Gallows" . Yet through it all we are left off with a feeling of hope. The uplifting "Into the Woods (reprise) is instrumental ode to Lincoln'e hope of a better world. In a time of chaos Lincoln hoped for a "united states". I am going on about the lyrics but let me add that the music and vocals are outstanding. A talented bunch of musicians for sure. A truly remarkable album that must be heard more than once. Great job Black River Band!

another hit ...
Honestly and straight from the heart, if I could write and sing music, The Black River Band is what I would aspire to be without a doubt having been a big fan of this band since the beginning.

The music just continues to wallop you with its great themes, instrumentation, and vocals.

The theme here is carried forward from their album “Voices From The Past” in that its told from different perspectives.

As a Civil War enthusiast, I love the aspirations, goals, the soldier leadership (particularly of the Confederacy), the courage of the North and South, and I greatly appreciate that both sides were finally brought back together.

The most poignant theme was the leadership of Abraham Lincoln who was pulled by personal and war tragedies and criticism from all sides throughout the course of the Civil War but who somehow managed to “steer the course” to victory despite these severe rip tides.

This story is so aptly told by The Black River Band. I so love their music !!

Black River Band's Latest
I've listened to the CD several times now and this is by far Black River Band's best work. The lyrics give you scope of those years just after the civil war. Songs like Ride with Mary, Man of Justice, and Gallows tell thier various points of view from the people they depict. An interesting take on My Daddy's Dead, usually something like this would usually be a slow haunting melody but BRB (Black River Band) throw a curve ball and change the tempo to create a unique counter point between words and music. Into the Woods (Resprise) was a moving instrumental peice covering the various themes of the songs on this album. The tension and times of those last few days of Lincoln's life are elegantly captured here with heart felt lyrics. This record took a long time to produce and was worth the wait. Relive a revisionist history with this collection of historical yet poetic songs.
