After the success of “Alligator Woman” and three or four trips to England to play with blues bands and solo acoustic gigs, I decided to tell the world more about my personal, private thoughts and songs about politics, love and the world condition in general.
On “Phoenix” I paid homage to the musical styles which most influenced my life. Music by Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis, Art Blakley, Bill Doggett, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Neil Young, Tracy Chapman, Charles Lloyd, Donovan, Philly Joe Jones, John & Alice Coltrane and Jackson Brown.
The themes of “Phoenix By The Sea” begins with a piano piece, almost new age and tranquil. Midway the piece I struck some dissonant chords ‘cause it was just too mellow for me. “You Shouda Known Betta” is about my adventures on the road in England when events did not work well or I was stranded by inept “minders”. Through the mishaps I found a ‘band of Angels’. “Jimi Time Warrior” trips thru the sixties to the Monterey Pop Fest where I first heard Hendrix rock. “Jamaica” of course is about what I thought of my homeland and what really happened. I got to see the bullet holes in Marley’s house, heard Peter Tosh extol his faith in JAH and found many answers to i soul questions of origin.
