The Bohemian Caverns Jazz Orchestra is a 17-piece big band founded by baritone saxophonist Brad Linde and Bohemian Caverns owner Omrao Brown. Co-directed by Linde and Joe Herrera, the band debuted on April 19, 2010 and performs 51 Mondays out of the year. The BCJO presents a variety of big band literature and features some of the District's best musicians each week at the historic Bohemian Caverns. Music from Ellington, Basie, Strayhorn, Thad Jones, OliverNelson, Maria Schneider and originals by band members embrace and challenge the tradition of big band repertoire.
Outside of its home on U Street, the BCJO has performed at the Lincoln Theatre, The Smithsonian Institute, Atlas Performing Arts Center, Strathmore, and An Die Musik in Baltimore, and has appeared as part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, the Washington Women in Jazz Festival, Intersections: A New America Arts Festival, and the Petworth Jazz Project.
The ensemble has featured guest soloists including guitarist Yotam Silberstein, baritone saxophonist Frank Basile, progressive hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon, vocalist Christie Dashiell, arranger/composer Eyal Vilner and vocalist Yalla Ballin, and devoted performances to the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. The orchestra was the recipient of the 2012 DC Mayor's Arts Award for Outstanding Emerging Artist. In Spring 2013, the BCJO will release its first album, featuring arrangements and compositions written for the band.
